Porsche Cayman right intake fan?

Hi, wondering if anyone can help me. On the right hand side intake of the Cayman (2.7, 2007) there is a fan inside. It does not seem to be turning when engine is on at all, I’ve tried aircon on and off Incase it was Ac Related. Can anyone tell me what the fan is actually used for ? , does it provide extra engine cooling when driving ?

I've only ever had mine kick on a few times (that I've heard) when I've been in slow traffic and it's been really hot outside (i.e. in France last summer). So I suspect it's just extra cooling when needed. Never stayed on for very long.

On my Boxster it comes on when hot and the air is stationary.
Which is the end of every journey, when I’m pulling into the drive waiting for the garage door to open. But then I’m in a “hot climate”.
It’s very loud, you’d notice it if it was on.
