...isn't a name that younger readers may know , unless they are well informed enough on Formula 1 history to know about the Ensign team . Mo has died , sadly , and made a great contribution to the sport with his F3 , then F1 cars and latterly he worked in Indy Cars , for Chip Ganassi and in his own right . He was one of that wonderful breed of British 'can do' practical engineers - see also Derek Bennett , Eric Broadley and so many others - whose cars so often punched above their weight.

Sadly , Clay Reggazoni was seriously hurt in an Ensign F1 at Long Beach but team drivers are a who's who of GP racing - including Amon , Piquet , Ickx, Lammers, Surer and Daly. And Tiff Needell too... I first saw the team at Rufforth , the long lost track near York , when they were competing in their own very pretty F3 car

Sad news. Though I had the thought that he was already gone.

As you say - he contributed far more to the sport than many would recognise. The Macau GP was his doing IIRC.

There are far uglier cars than that. Lola F1's failed attempt being one of them.

Ugliness is in the eye of the beholder.

And I did say "one of the ugliest".

The first F1 car I ever saw in action was Mo Nunn's 1978 Ensign - demonstrated by Derek Daly at the Phoenix Park in Dublin in 1978 -

I was really impressed with the noise and the sheer speed - and the braking ability.

R.I.P.

I'm of the generation who came across him in Indycars race engineering for Alex Zanardi and JPM; did a lot to hype up the latter as the next best thing to Senna.

Montoya was a very talented young driver, alas his wife ruined his F1 career.

A bit harsh I thought, and then I thought again.
