Morning all,

I’m 31, have a wife* and 6 month old*. Run a timber company* so work can be steady but has been a little bit more trying* if late but at no point have I felt stressed.

  • all new “stress”.
Having been suffering from migraines daily for 4 weeks I scheduled a doctors appointment and eye test. Eye test all good, still 20:20 vision and no concerns.

I sporadically checked my blood pressure but not for a few months; my norm is always a little low 118/70 HB57. However at the doctors it was 158/121 HB98 (lowest of 3). Having checked since it’s up and down like a yo-yo (taking average readings from 3).

Should I be worried? What can I do?

I’ve got high bloodd pressure but I’m 10 years older than you. I’m on tablets for it but mine is always higher at the doctors.

What’s your diet like, mine was bad and I drink a lot, hence the poor health!

Don’t talk to a medical professional or qualified health care practitioner, no way

Instead, ask a group of unknown, unqualified strangers on the internet, then order some recommended drugs ~ from China ~ online

You know it makes sense.
Oh by the way, a wife and child does not necessarily equal stress

Is the doctor worried?

118/70 is near enough ideal but a diastolic of 121 is pretty extreme.

You need to take more readings and average them WHEN YOU ARE RELAXED. Any BP reading will be far less relevant if you are feeling stressed or anxious. Your doctor might suggest a 24 hour ambulatory monitor.

Diet isn’t too bad and I don’t drink a lot. Less than once a week. I’ve stopped exercising as much as before owing to a change in job.

Didn’t appear to be. He gave me migraine tablets, Sumatriptan, and told me to see how I got on. Pleasingly, the first sign of a migraine these tablet do suppress it but I’m not convinced that this is fighting the correct issue. High blood pressure is abnormal for me.

It's probably a tumour

The very act of having to get your blood pressure taken / worrying about BP probably raises it a bit

I did three this morning just after I woke up, average was 133/90 HR62. Last night after a film it was 121/70 HR56. I’m now at Silverstone Classic sat in the car with, guess what, a migraine albeit now tailing off. 148/102 HR87. (It’s hot, I’m anxious about the above and my head hurts, it’s not going to be low!)

I was told it was white coat syndrome that used to send my bp through the roof at the docs. It's true, I do have a fear of being carried off by men in white coats laugh
Regular checks at home showed it was too high, but a combination of pills, gentle exercise and cutting back on cider and chips have got it back to where it should be.

My BP was always in the very acceptable range when taken by the surgery nurse, but higher, (not dangerously so), when taken by my GP.
He told me that this was “white coat syndrome”, as in I was more relaxed when the nurse checked it, but I was concerned when he did, in case he told me to stop eating something, or knock the vodka on the head, or that I should alter my lifestyle in some way.

I'm no doctor (!) but those readings sound fine to me given that you can explain the higher readings. Anxiety will send the readings sky high so I'd say you're worrying unnecessarily. Any reading of 121/70 would be excellent for many people.

Sticks.

Try taking readings in the afternoon/evening too. I'm told they'll be lower.

I think you'll find that advice is to take readings mornings and evenings over a period of time, then average them out to determine what is 'normal' for you.

Yes, sorry, I should have said that.

Had a health check and now on blood pressure pills.
My doctor provides a chart for you to fill in,they even provided the monitor the first time.
Two sets of readings each day at the same time ( as is practical) repeat for 7 days.
At each reading you have to also take 2 readings a few minutes apart.
Sometime the two readings could be almost identical, others varied ( some wildly)
At the end of the week they have 28 sets of figures to compare for a far better idea of whats happening
1st pills i was prescribed lowered my bp by there were large random spikes
( you have to do the whole bp test thing for a week again after a month on the pills)
Second lot of pills are brilliant
