Replaced the rear brake discs and pads on a Passat. Wound the pistons right back. Lubed the slider pins. Lubed the pad edges in the calliper carriers. Refitted everything. Calipers freely slide. But as soon as brakes are applied the pads don’t come completely away from the discs they rub slightly. Pretty sure this normally happens on my cars but on this one it’s so bad I can hear the rubbing sound constantly while driving.

The Passat doesn’t seem to have metal sliders like my other cars.

Is this normal???

There's nothing to pull the pads back from the disc apart from the stiffness of the seals so it's normal for the pads to drag very slightly. Suggest checking that the wheel still spins freely and there is no heat build-up in normal driving to confirm the pads aren't dragging excessively.

The noise can depend on a lot of factors including the pad type and condition - it may improve once the pads have been bedded in. Anti-squeal shims or damping pads/goo can affect it too.

Did you clean the disc braking surface thoroughly before fitting?

Yes. Everything cleaned up

Yes spins fine just slight touching, never had the same on my other cars though.

I think I sorted the issue by filing the calliper carriers rather than just sanding with high grit, and caking them in copper grease and it seems to have done the job now.
