Just wandering if any owners have failed their mot due to ball joints on their 981. My car is on 38000 miles so I'm quite surprised by this. I'm not entirely sure which ball joints but hopefully the failure sheet will be a bit more informative.

Under warranty?

Yes, I know it's "wear and tear" but when I queried what would be covered by my extended warranty my OPC gave the example of a leaking shock absorber at 40k miles and said it would be covered.

There's also reasonable expectation. My 330ci front suspension arms needed replacing at 100k miles. I'd expect "ball joints" to last more than 38k miles but your OPC will argue you've been rallying in the Sahara no doubt.

Only a small garage - we're interested in even quoting.

Does this mean I need to replace these - £300 a pop.

I generally allow the passenger side to absorb impacts like humps as I'm sitting on the other side.

You could pay £300 + vat

or https://www.carparts4less.co.uk/suspension-arm-and...

its best to change all 4 so you only have to reset the geo once.

I've done some digging and it appears the front arms are different to the rears. I've ordered a front arm and will have a go at changing it myself. I will try a visual comparison with the rear arm. Someone has suggested the rear arms are the same as all 9x6 9x7 arms.

I wonder if one of my rears is on the way out, I can hear a knocking over bumps at the rear. Will find out in a few days at the MOT! Hoping it’s just a bushing. Bloody councils and their speed “bumps” (anti vehicIe longevity obstacles). Everytime I see one I have unsavoury thoughts. Round my parts it’s the road surface, there’s badly maintained concrete road sections that even at walking pace clang and crash the car. People behind get right narked off when you’re taking it easy. I used to fly over them in my Peugeot but the cayman just doesn’t like it.

I now have a new shiny arm on my kitchen worktop. It's a JTC1619 from TRW.

Not wishing to teach you to suck eggs, but make sure the car is on the ground before torqueing up the inner bolt after you've fitted the new arm smile

There's a chance the same bolt will be seized in the inner bush, but hopefully not .... beer

I've never put spanner to Porsche suspension before so any tips well received.

In that case, hose anything you'll be undoing/removing with decent penetrating fluid/oil for a few days before getting stuck in.
Word on the street (PH actually) is that a mixture of ATF power steering/automatic transmission fluid and acetone will free off pretty much anything smile

Failing that use GT85 or Wurth Rost off. Keep us posted, and don't forget to take lots of photos (including any injuries gained during the process) Good luck smile

I had a little look under there and I can't figure out how to tighten the inner nut once the car is on the ground. What with me being a typically powerfully built ph'er.
