Clunky clutch 718 Boxster S PDK
Discussion
Hello everyone,
I hope someone can help me. In May 2018 I picked up my new 718 Boxster S, sapphire blue with dark grey platinum 20" wheels, an awesome looking car! I've driven about 1500 miles so far. Early on I heard clunky noises, likely coming from the gear box (I'm not a car mechanic …). It sounds like metal to metal and appear when driving in low revs (1000 RPM) in 2nd gear only. It does not appear at other revs or in other gears. The situation typically appears when slowing down for tight corners, or speed bumps. I can also reproduce the sound in automatic as well as while driving in manual.
At the Porsche garage they initially acknowledged the problem and first replaced the hydraulic system of the clutch, and when that didn't solve the issue, they replaced the entire gearbox. But the clunky sound is still there. Now Porsche claims this sound is normal for this particular engine. It's very annoying and shameful when people are turning heads not because of the car but because of the sound.
I uploaded a video (ignore the video part and focus on the audio), where I slightly accelerate in 2nd gear, then brake until 1000 rpm, slightly accelerate, brake until 1000 rpm etc. Video can be found here: https://youtu.be/nCz3-9bdEVE
Does anyone know what this sounds is? Do other 718 Cayman/Boxster drivers experience something like this?
This is my 1st Porsche and although I love everything else about the car, this is very disappointing
Thanks a lot!

No experience of 718s but I've had 2 987s with PDK. My current one is quiet with no clunks and is smooth at all times, my older one clunked into 1st/2nd gear at low revs, but there was no appreciable difference in performance.
I think it's a reflection on how it was driven when new (i.e. city driving or country roads) as the clutches bed in and cogs wear in (what I mean here is lots of low gear changes in city driving and short journey heat cycles lead to different wear patterns, which may lead to clunking).
Not an expert by any stretch but my thoughts from an engineer's perspective.
Definitely one to take to your OPC though.
