Hi, I brought a porsche 987 2005 about a month ago. It was all running lovely and sounded great. But then I noticed the exhaust was blowing a little and also I was getting a burning rubber/plastic smell. I climbed under the car and found a number of small holes in the 2 back boxes which I gun gummed and the blow sent away but since then the car ticking over doesn't sound the same. It is a bit ticky and the great sound low rev / tickover deep sound is not then and the smell is still there. To drive it seems fine and when you put your foot down it still sound great then, but like I say it just doesn't seem the same?

These engines do tick a little normally, and it could be that the blowing of the exhaust masked this until now. If you think it's unusually loud would be best to get it looked at by a specialist.

A blowing exhaust gives the exhaust gasses a less restricted route out to atmosphere and you may have noticed this as a very very slight increase in power, so this may be the reason for the car feeling a little slower. Alternatively if you put too much sealant in it may be restricting the flow in the pipes which may have a similar effect.

I'd say take this as an excuse to get a refurbished carnewhal exhaust, or a new aftermarket. Also a quick oil change might be a good idea, the 2 year service intervals are too long IMO.

Also - the plasticy smell from the rear wheel arch is normal, I've had this on both my Caymans, I think it's from a coating used in while in build.

Many thanks, that helps and I think I will check on getting a replacement exhurst. Can anyone recommend a cheap one to get?

The original fixings, gaskets and clamps corrode. If the exhaust itself is corroded then the others bits above are probably gone too causing more leak points.

Fair point I can't see, hear or feel any other blows on the boxes but it is possible that there is still a blow further back in the system. A friend suggested putting a cloth over the exhurst pipe and see if it cuts out. If it does there is no leaks but if it continues to run then the exhurst gases are getting out somewhere else. But I was a but concerned about chasing other problems by doing that?

Had another listen to the car last night and it diffenently sounds different to before. It has lost it deep tone even just ticking over and it is not until you get to high revs that you here a nice sound roar. It maybe this is how it is meant to sound and with the holes in it, it was sounding deeper before but it is also a bit disappointing if it is.
