Seconded. Difference between a Boxster and Cayman is night and day for me in terms of rigidity. And you don't have to be anywhere near the limit to feel the difference.

Getting the roof down is always good fun though, especially with PSE. Summer, winter, doesn't matter as long as it's not raining. So that's one plus for the Boxster.

This is what i told myself when i bought mine. Felt like i bought two cars. It transforms with the top off.

I get the sentiment, I like the look of a few 2 seat convertibles. 2 of my friends have Boxsters, we all bought within week or 2 of each other... I went for a 981 CS... like the OP I’d never have the lid off. I’ve had a few Boxsters from the OPC and nice as they are, wasn’t an ownership prospect for me. As I say, I understand why others love them.

Which version sounds best and what are some of the more popular aftermarket exhausts?

Aftermarket headers + PSE is a good option, thats the way I'm going.

What headers are you looking at? I've started looking and I'm leaning for straight through (decat) manifolds and a Cobb. It will be pretty loud when the valves open on the PSE but with them closed and cruising its not loud or droney.

Might be getting mine done end of March.

Exact set up I have, COBB.

Jonny Cocker is a mate of mine he runs JCR Porsche so will be using him for headers.

Yeah I have spoken with Jonny on FB. Romain Levesque is a close friend so been speaking to him about mapping the Cobb for me. What headers does Jonny sell, are you doing 200cell cats?

He has some already apparently, they tuned a 981 GT4 a while ago. Where is Romain based? I want to get a custom tune done for Cobb device once its done.

Be interesting to see them. Ro is in the UK. That's exactly what i'll be wanting to do once the headers are replaced. Ro visits Romania as Cyclon are building his Time Attack car, and Vector have him over for mapping. But as you know with Cobb you can just send the data logs.

I have been searching for manifolds and also found these in the UK, Never heard of them but after a google seen Porsche, Aston Martin, etc owners use their products. I've emailed them to see what 200cell cats they use but if your just going de-cat manifold then £750 doesn't seem back with 2 year warranty.

Think the JCR ones are like £2k might be worth trying them for a while. I have the Stage 2 file on my device read to be flashed as well.

Yeah most seem to be that price, Fabspeed are well priced but import duty added on and they are over 2K.

I might try the top gear ones, a friend who has fabspeed decat manifolds say they look the same, sound mental, have less drone than 200cell cat ones and on cruise sound no louder than OEM, combined with Cobb give change the 981 into the car it should be smile

On the Boxster thing, I drove a friend's convertible Audi before considering the Boxster and nope, I will never buy a convertible. The roof would never come down and if it's always going to stay up, you may as well have the benefits of a hard top.

As for the whole lack of choice in NI thing, basically if you live in NI and you want the right car, you have to fly to England, test it at a PC there and get them to ship it over, which they do free of charge.

I've been in contact with George McMillan and he seems decent, but that 987 Cayman S has around 70k miles on it if I remember correctly.
You comments made me laugh as my experience was the complete opposite. I looked for a 981 Boxster S on the mainland and eventually the only car that had everything, PASM, PSE, PTV, 20's, PDK etc etc was at Porsche Belfast. I flew over and collected it.

As for roof down in NI I was at a wedding last year and took the Boxster over from Holyhead and the roof never went up

Audi is not Porsche. Granted they share a few things (such as the Mirror buttons are the same as VW's and Audi). The roof in my Boxster works flawlessly and has never caused me any issues.

On a site note, I would genuinly be interested to know how many parts are shared between VAG group and Porsche. The guys at OPC leeds says its a tiny amount.

Not really seen anything on my 981 that is shared, I would imagine going forward though it will get more and more.

Both my Mercs were petrol, but yes, the Merc engines especially the 3.5 litre V6 have all the torque around 1200-1500rpm and they basically fizzle out above 3000rpm. There is no point is wringing out a Merc engine.

I have test drove a Cayman and a Cayman S. I found the base Cayman more satisfying because you have to really push it hard.
Yes, that's the key. I tried the S but too lazy. My 981 2.7 Cayman is a great all rounder. Commute, have fun, it does it all.
Far more sensible a buy than my Aston which cost £1000 a month to run! Yes, really. And it was crapily built (British!).

I average 38mpg for all kind of driving and no big issues but I do intend to keep the warranty running for peace of mind at circa £1,300 for 2 years. Just over 3 years of ownership.

Better looking, better handling, better driving and overall ownership experience than a 997.
