According to a single poster on Rennlist, the Cayman-6 and Boxster-6 are going to replace the current 718 GTS i.e. the facelifted/refreshed 718 GTS model will lose the F4T and gain a 400PS 4.0ltr flat six. The 718 GT4 and 718 Spyder will have a 4.0ltr flat six with 420PS.

Interesting. The info apparently came from a US OPC salesperson.
If that means that the GTS/6 is a standard production model (and presumably comes in both manual an PDK) that will make a lot of people happy - though not necessarily the 911 marketing men.

I agree. 380PS sounds more realistic and would match the usual 15-20PS bump that Porsche add to their cars.

Replacing the GTS was the key thing for me, and I can see how that would work.

though that would be pretty much a complete turn around and pie in the face of current 718 owners.

surely they'll be bit more subtle than that?

Fascinating. If the engine is NA then (unless a limited run, a la GT4) this would go against emission regs in all the major markets whilst closing the gap up significantly on the 911. Just can't see VW/Audi signing off on it given all the negative eco-press of late.

The only way I could see this going now is hybrid drive and batteries.

4.0L and only 380hp..... no thanks.

For all the 4.0L talk - don't people think that is quite a large capacity for such a small car anyway... and its not a supercar?

Could it be a different capacity?

Why would that go against emission laws. They are based on emissions not engine size !

Depends on the market. In Europe CO2 is one of the main drivers, compares to average MPG in the US I believe and as we all know Chinese import taxes are based on cubic capacity.

You would expect any large capacity NA engine is going to have higher emissions especially CO2 unless they've found a magic bullet ?

It'll have a GPF therefore be clean enough for Euro 6. It's this, tied in with a 4.0ltr capacity and only 380-400PS that makes me think it'll be a lacklustre engine. I feel the same about he GT4 too to be fair, like "cmoose" says in the their posts it'd much better to have a smaller capacity higher revving engine.

But those cars are supposed to be brutish hot rods... Caysters have generally been on the balance and finesse part of the spectrum.

If they are going the higher revving route they really need to have lower and much closer ratios in the box. I somehow can't see that happening - Porsche have ignored that constant criticism for year.

i agree the 4L is indeed a bit unnecessary in a standard Cayster.

i just about get it in a GT4 but i'm also of the smaller capacity/higher revving/lighter persuasion.

Depends on how much power it has. At 370/380 bhp I expect the current 718 GTS would still see it off by virtue of its greater torque.

I’m sure a six cylinder 718 GTS will be a great car, and remove one of the two main reasons why I haven’t upgraded by now. The other reason isn’t soo easy surmountable for me anyway - is it going to be £30k + better, the guesstimate cost to change, than my current 981 BGTS?

I don't think so, that's my question too. I also prefer the 981 looks.

The exterior appearance has grown on me, but I still don’t like the new messy central vents and the return of the sport chrono “wart” , much prefer the flush vents and nicely integrated sport chrono on the 981. And no doubt fitted with Particulate filter so likely won’t have the wonderful 981 GTS exhaust sound.
But steering , PDK, navigation all improved but even so don’t add up to anything near the likely cost to change.
