Oh dear that does sound rather crisp. You are a very bad man RSVP911.

I do love my Spyder, who wouldn’t in this weathersmile but not for the reasons I expected to when I bought it.
For me it’s just not a Porsche GT car, it’s far to smooth, comfortable and civilized. Doesn’t feel very quick, awful gearing, a bit detached from the driving experience. What it is is a brilliant rag top sports car, for me the best I’ve ever had, it looks sublime, fantastic with the top down, cracking stereo, smooth, comfortable and civilized what the heck is not to like..... oh hang on confused

So do I spunk the thick end of £5K on a lovely exhaust note, which no doubt makes it a bit more PorscheGT car like. Or enjoy it for what it is and use something else for my more visceral kicks?

First world problems and all that.
I’m the same as you... have done a fair few miles now and been thinking the same.

This is just my opinion - not starting any rows here’s as I know some are super happy with their Spyder - so nothing personal.

I think the Spyders stunning - very pretty - I must have had over 100 people either comment, ask what it is, or stop and talk cars / Porsche. This is up there with the best looking cars and seems everyone of all ages loves it.

Sublime to drive, super smooth - very nice indeed. But that’s the problem - it’s a little too nice, should be quicker, and the gearing is frustrating. The gearing never bothered me on the 981 - I got the complaints from others, but it didn’t fuss me. Yet here it’s more noticeable. I think it’s because to hear anything, to get any real drama - you have to nail it, by which time even in third your 100+ ... in the 981 yeah you had the same gearing, but you still had plenty of noise and drama at lower speeds too, even cruising it had a nice sound. Without it, it’s missing the character of the old one.

Also slightly gutted they didn’t make it faster than the old one. I know it’s probably got the legs on it past 60 but I don’t think there’s much in it. Yes - its not about 0-60, it’s not about times, if you want that buy a turbo etc etc. But come on... they should have upped the anti a bit!! Even 0-60 in 4 would have been a nice improvement (and still kept it well out of reach of the 911 hierarchy!)

Anyhow... to fix the sound issue I have invested in the JCR which is on order. Have heard some brilliant things about it - that it’s a game-changer. And RSVP911 is certainly a happy man now ; )

I’ve also bought a Cargraphics remote valve controller (£390) - using the remote you can select to either have the flaps fully open (always open) or revert to factory controls (Just for early morning starts, can’t piss the neighbours off too much!).. I remember I used to unplug the PSE cable on my old 997 and it was a massive improvement.. Lovely noise.. So this, plus the awesome JCR unit - fingers crossed it’s going reach it’s potential and sound immense..

I did toy with the £5k, its more than I expected for an exhaust fix... But the way I’m looking at it is - I waited 2 years for this car, and for me - it’s not quite right. If this fixes it - then it’s money well spent... And in years to come I didn’t want to look back and think FFS, that Spyder had potential... I should have sorted that exhaust out!

Anyway... RSVP911 - can’t wait to join you on the other side!!

Once it’s all sorted I’ll post a (smaller) review

Cheers
beer

Whilst we are on the topic of Spyder niggles. How are you all getting on with the clutch?
It’s quite a heavy old beast, on a par with my Sprinter van daily wink
Which is fine but now I’m fully run in and exploring the performance envelope it feels a bit marginal.
Full beans starts result in a fair bit of slip and a lot of clutch smell. In fact it bloody stinks! Not got stuck into any track days yet because of Covid but am a bit worried about durability. Anybody else or just me? FWIW mine doesn’t feel like a sub 4 second 0-60 car, nothing like

Ps just to avoid confusion.
It’s a brilliant car and I love it driving

Hi there - clutch weight - it’s a dream vs the 981 - very happy with it - firm enough but not stupidly so.

Not noticed the smelly clutch - must try harder smile

Compared to my Evo it's super light ... Wouldn't want anything lighter or I'd end up doubting that there is actually a clutch there at all!

Further to my earlier posts, I've been to the Susten, Grimsel & Furka passes again in the GT4 and while it is a bit frustrating that I cannot really rev the car out to even the top of second without running risk of a huge speeding fine, it does actually sound pretty good in mountain passes. Done a similar trip in the GT-R and while that is louder (and you have to watch the speedo even more carefully), it doesn't sound as good as the GT4.

The borders open up on Monday so I will soon be able to take the GT4 out for an autobahn blast and film it, if that's still what people want me to do? If so, do you also want a comparison video with the GT-R to give some acceleration reference?

The 718 Spyder has lost a lot of the character I love in my 981 Spyder. The above points for starters all very expensive all non Porsche approved and all very necessary to put back a massive chunk of what is sorely missing otherwise

I wasn't impressed with the new lightness of the steering set up but the lighter clutch was very much appreciated especially when I hit a minor traffic jam and the slightly softer feel to the suspension set up in standard mode was impressive considering the new rubber it wears

Factor in the no PTS option, no real world performance gains of any note, I couldn't convince myself that this version was worth the cash difference when I felt overall I was getting a lot less "fun factor" for a lot more money which all seemed a little pointless and this was pre-covid19 & global economic meltdown and all the pain that's going to now bring

The 718 definitely feels and sounds more grown up, very smooth and very quiet while the 981 feels and sounds at any revs more sports car to me with its slightly firmer ride, slightly heavier steering feel and far more dramatic sounding in sports plus mode downshifts not to mention the non PC pops & bangs laugh

Finally due to the gearing and PSE valves opening much later in the rev range compared to the 981 having some muted fun in the 718 you really have to be going at insane speeds which just isn't for me

Bottom line in Porsche sports car world both are exceptionally great pieces of kit and if you never owned a 981 version I can see why the 718 would be the must have model for many especially if price difference isn't your master

You may prefer the 981, but implying only those who've never owned one will prefer the 718 version is a bit of a stretch IMHO. Horses for courses and all that smile

Anyone got any inside knowledge of when Spyder orders may start again?

I’m in ‘The Que’ at an OPC and because the people in front of me have now dropped off the list I’m next, so of course I’m getting impatient 😉

Interesting points. I go back even further because I have a Cayman R alongside my 718 Spyder.
They are a fascinating pair, they have exactly the same seats, and a similar feel. The R is a simpler, noisier, less finessed car. The Spyder the more complete package. There are elements of both that are superior but as to which one I prefer the jury is out. By all subjective measures the Spyder is the better, more complete car. Objectively I am not so sure.
I am patiently waiting for the Covid crisis to disappear into the background of life so that I can track them both back to back to see which I prefer. My R is very lightly tweaked so it will be a very very close call. I suspect there will be a long term place for both in the garage. smile

Did anyone spec the £2700 Burmester audio in the 718 Spyder and consider it worth the dollar?
It seems a fair wedge over the Bose system....

I’m the 2nd owner of my car and I’ve got Burmester in my Spyder- it is excellent!! Although, I wouldn’t have optioned it from new, personally! Some better options for the money, especially as the cabin’s fairly noisy anyway.
Probably helps resell mind....

They are still using the OEM backbox in the vids... really you'd want to pair this with replacement pipes like you have to full unleash it.

I had a Burmester in a 911.1 GTS (miss that one) - it sounded amazing... absolutely amazing.. took music to another level. When I just wanted to take it easy the stereo was always on. I’ve not specced it in a new car yet, but if I get one in the future that I know hands down it will be a long termer I will either spec it or look for one with it. If you like your music, it’s worth it.

Yes definitely - be great to see that comparison - some awesome footage from the mountain passes and the autobahn blast for sure spin
