718 Gt4 exhaust options
Discussion
More general noise on cold start is down to injection strategy and the car trying to get various components up to temp as quickly as possible, for occupant comfort and particularly for emission and particulate control.(Cats & GPF)
So car has more revs before dropping down and more injections per stroke during compression during this warmup phase.
These cars will open up on the sound front after a few decent miles.... sound isn’t an issue imo... so it’s not the first thing I’d be rushing to spend would spend any money at all, or bother fiddling with on a 718 4.0.

I tried the mod with the valves by wiring the actuator in the open position as it seemed the simplest way to it try out,I found the sound much improved but there seems to be a slight flutter on the revs at idle and I’m wondering if there is slight movement of the flaps.
Think I’ll do the m6 grub screw mod, does the pipe simply pull off or is there a clip, without removing the wheels or lifting the car it seems a bit difficult to see.

Lockdown boredom and idle hands... very easy to faff with too! (The vacuum lines, that is) So car has more revs before dropping down and more injections per stroke during compression during this warmup phase.

Easier with the wheel off, less risk of skinning your knuckles, ask me how I know there is a small crimped clip which you can open with a small screwdriver. Pull off pipe screw in grubscrew, push pipe back on, clamp up clip with pliers. Takes about 3 mins per side once the wheel is off.Think I’ll do the m6 grub screw mod, does the pipe simply pull off or is there a clip, without removing the wheels or lifting the car it seems a bit difficult to see.

May be getting 200 cell Kline headers fitted soon. Will update soon.
It'll be interesting to hear how you get on Having just had my standard exhaust sorted I'm tempted to stick with it as it's great to have no drone again. Combined with the LWFW the car performs superbly and I won't have to worry about noise limits on track days.
I must be getting old
I have been saying this… in reality, the car doesn’t really need exhaust mod for sound.… I’d only ever have considered it as part of a performance package.
As stock sounds well enough for the driver on the inside, especially as you put miles on it, and that’s all that really matters.

I think it sounds better with a replacement exhaust but drone is an issue and combined with a lower overall tone of exhaust note it's a little tough on the ears/head. I have a theory that the reason the car was delayed so long was to get the exhaust sorted and it might explain why we heard so many different sounding mules.
I'm warming to accepting the car as it is now with the LWFW and just driving the wheels off it

Have you returned the 9m exhaust?I'm warming to accepting the car as it is now with the LWFW and just driving the wheels off it

Indeed. I went with the headers first for the performance gain. Think the sound should improve to but not as intrusive as a bacbox or OAPs.Having just had my standard exhaust sorted I'm tempted to stick with it as it's great to have no drone again. Are you getting the sports clutch now to go with the LWFW? - as I see they are now recommending them together... like other people do.
Nope, I'm happy as-is. I'll just replace the clutch when it needs it as there's no point breaking open the car again just for a different clutch.EDIT: also, I think the clutch is a must-have for the 981 and the LWFW because of the lack of damping somewhere that the 718 has? I can't remember the precise techie details, it was just something Pete at 9m said in passing.

Which PCGB days - have you booked. I'm on Silverstone, Donington and will pick up Outlon Park later in the year - along with a couple Goodwood if i can get on.
I cancelled my Angelsey booking - as I'd want to overnight somewhere - and not sure of all of that will be open etc.

I will indeed.
Are you suspecting there'll be a problem with the standard clutch and the LWFW on my car?
It will be fine for now - and likely be just down to more wear (its a wear item anyway) dependent on your own driving. Are you suspecting there'll be a problem with the standard clutch and the LWFW on my car?
But theres are reason why you see these parts changed out together, particularly given their intended use... generally you do LWFW for better response, and you're driving harder.
The engine/FW will be spinning faster to you need to make sure your friction pad can grip it reliably - so uprated plate will offer that.
As you said, if and when - then something to address at that point.
Same as upgrading power without changing clutch plate.
I had just wondered if you had been offered the revision as an early customer.

Cheers T, that's what I suspected. The first LWFW and clutch kit have gone out to a known 718 GT4 owner who has fried their clutch in a very small amount of miles, so that's why I think they've requested an uprated clutch from 9m. That car has been driven hard. Very hard. Thanks for your thoughts and it sounds like my thinking was correct in that there's no point in changing mine until it needs it. I'll decide what to do at that point depending on how quickly the original has worn. But theres are reason why you see these parts changed out together, particularly given their intended use... generally you do LWFW for better response, and you're driving harder.

I'll be at Donington and Oulton PCGB days. I was booked onto Snetterton in June but now it's moved to August I can't make it as I was tying June in with a short UK holiday. I'm considering SIlverstone but can't decide whether to bite the bullet and do it or not...
