Just looking for some recommendations of where to look for one of these, my current searches are -

Autotrader
eBay
Pistonheads
RSJ Sports Cars

Alternatively if anyone knows of a good one please let me know. I'm up in Scotland so if I was to purchase from away down south I'd be looking to get a PPI.

It has to be a 3.4 Gen2 manual, not picky on colour with the exception of silver I'm not so keen on.

Thanks,

Duncan.

Give Adam a call at Reason Porsche, he's at Crowfield nr Ipswich. This guy is totally ocd with his cars and only sells the very best. He might be able to help. He did have a gen2 3.4S with £10k worth of options, white with black leather, sports chrono, manual, carrera 19's.
Ive seen it in the flesh and its perfect, may be worth a call..

Thanks Andy, that one caught my eye today on autotrader (I think) but it's listed on his website as sold. I liked it and sensible price as well smile

A shame if it is sold Dunc, it was/is an extremely nice one. Was going to buy it myself but came across a 23k mile Gen1 3.4S instead.
Will put some feelers out for another one..

Also have a look in the Porsche GB Forum as sometimes PCGB members advertise their cars their initially prior to going out the extended market.

Not a massive amount currently on sale but always worth a punt or even put up a wanted ad.

This is a car market I have kept a close eye on for a long time, recently a 2011 one owner car with full porsche history, very low miles circa 11k and a very good spec.( leather, xenons and sports seats)came to the market for £28k and sold fairly quickly as I expected.Very few cars to choose from but good cars do come up but not that often .The car you missed out on I would say was overpriced ,for that price level I would expect a lot less miles.
Keep a close eye on autotrader and pistonheads and be prepared to act fast when the right car comes up. Happy hunting

Thanks for the responses smile

Andy, I would appreciate that smile I'd also consider a gen2 man 997 but realise I'll pay for the privilege and not sure if it's justifiable.

Cmoose, thanks I'll add to my list - do you think it would be sensible to purchase unseen from this particular garage? I would with RSJ, and of course I'll be driving it so higher mileage (but still sensible) cars are what I'm after.

GT4P, thanks for the information.

One more question, are there any specialists (or enthusiasts) near Sheffield that could inspect a car for me? I've travelled far for cars before and don't enjoy it especially if they don't meet expectations!

Thanks,

Dunc.

You can always ask the owner to have the car submitted for a 111 point check at an OPC, if it passes all is good, if it fails then all options are open.

This is the direction I took when buying private, the owner agreed to pay for any repairs to get the car passed the 111 point check, I then payed extra money for him to put a Porsche warranty on the car and then drove home with my fully covered Cayman S.

That's a good shout Klippie, can you remember what sort of damage a 111 inspection costs?

Thanks,

Dunc

OP - I purchased mine from Maundrells in Oxfordshire. Good service, well prepped car. Always have a good selection, but not the cheapest

Another recommendation is Northway Porsche near Reading

The 111 point check is good value and gives you confidence that the car is in decent condition v's potentially buying a car which may have some hidden issues.

It may be worth a call to Kenny Dunn in Edinburgh. I've bought 2 cars from him in the last 3 years (most recent being a Gen 2 987 Boxster S) and would rate him very highly. He's not showing any such cars in stock at the moment, but he may be able to source something that's not openly for sale.

Mattman, thanks - good selection there. He's got a cayman sport in but it's 30k. I'm not overly sure what a sport is though?

GC1976, thanks I've given him a call and waiting for a call back.

cmoose, thanks. I'd like to think with a gen 2 the risk might be a little less of non 111 checked issues showing up?

Thanks,

Duncan.

I'd agree with Ashgoods recommendation.
I have not had the chance to deal with them but often think their prices are very similar to the same car at private sale but you get the backup of buying from a dealer (with excellent reputation). They only have a gen 2 2.9 base at the moment (still a great car)

That’s nonsense...passing the 111 point check then having an engine replaced under warranty is outstanding value for money for a £200 outlay plus warranty cost....unless I’am missing something really obvious.

"Errr, just that they missed the fact that the engine was fked." - dealer to blame for that, their issue no cost to you.

"The 111 point check is no good for checking a car. It's good for getting it onto the warranty" - yes it is, it checks the car to Porsche standards allows a warranty to be purchased, thats the point of the exersise, I'am pretty sure a dealer would only be too happy to inspect a car to any level required at additional cost.

There's not many Cayman S Gen II with manual box around, usually half a dozen or so on Autotrader, especially if you knock out private sellers. If you have a open ended timeframe, then you'll hopefully be able to buy one from a recommended specialist such as the ones suggested so far. Otherwise you'll probably have to go with whomever is selling one that meets your colour/spec/mileage requirements. If its not a Porsche specialist who should do a 111 anyway, I would definitely have an independent one done.

This caught my eye last night. Strong asking price for a private sale IMHO, but could partially be accounted for by condition and some of the work that's been done.

Looks to be a very clean looking car on the surface.
