Great post Snowy999!

Very interesting! I used Surrey Rolling Road and 9E before, both good guys.

Great post and thank you Snowy - that's the attitude I'm approaching the car with, to enjoy driving it. One of the quandries I'm in selling my E46 M3 is that I enjoyed driving it so much people are put off that it's got 135k miles, it's from 2002 FFS - and trust me there isn't a lot left with 135k on it anymore!

I think I need to get into a position where I've got an offer on the M3 as I've got 2 'toy' cars at the moment so something (probably both of them) has to give way to a GT4!

To anyone considering a 981 GT4 in the 6 months I've owned mine all I can say is its sublime. PS4s have transformed it from the half worn Cup 2 tyres it came with.
My only issue so far was a fault on the parking brake sorted under warranty which ended up costing £1500 approx for 2 x parking actuators and a set of park brake shoes. I've put 3k miles on it already and loved each one!

This thread always makes me smile but I feel that this recent poster needs some proper advice.

Be very, very careful what you purchase.

My white clubsport 2015 GT4 (buckets and cage) is missing the absolutely critical leather dash, smokers pack climate, alcantara visors and funny lights.

It has 20k miles on it (it had 4k when I bought it)

It has had 5 owners.

It's been modded, headers, intake, tune, MR dampers, 997 front calipers to fit 18" wheels.

It's wrapped blue to please the wife.

I service it every year at specialists rather than OPC (why bother they wouldn't put me on a list for a 718 GT4 never mind an RS)

So based on much of the feedback on this thread, it's junk.

I therefore constantly think how worthless it is as I drive it on the UK roads compete at hill climbs and do the occasional track day.

To the recent poster, basically buy one as soon as possible.

Let's say you buy the white one at JZM with stripes, I've seen it c10k miles and looks brand new, if in three year's it's worth £60k - so maybe £1 per mile. A bargain

But shop around for the fun of it, then stop buggering about and get a colour you like buy one.

Maybe you save £5k waiting six months or for winter....whatever. There was a guy on here (11R who was always telling me that my car would soon be worth £50k, whatever

Three months is how long it took my best mate to die of leukemia. His white 911 Classic which he bought at the start of his illness stood undriven.

it's the most fun car I have ever owned and here is my list so far:- I've been lucky and can't imagine ever being able to afford a 488GTB, Pista, GT2RS or decent Maclaren.

Cavalier SRi (yeah it was red and I thought it was great, my first car)
TVR S1 - smelt of dead sheep but was bloody quick
TVR Chimaera 4.0 x 2, also smelled of dead sheep, bonnet deformed above 1120 mph, were bloody quick
Range Rover (second gen) x 2, fantastic but utterly ruining and fuel guzzling barges
BMW 325i, nice but dull
BMW M5, awesome
Audi RS6, awesome
Audi RS4, awesome
BMW M3 CSL, absolutely awesome
Landrover defender 90 x2, 110, still have the 110 after 130k miles and 13 years of faultless service, awesome
Mini Countryman (this is shameful I admit, I told the wife it was for her but she denies this is true)

Classics - driven thousands of miles on all these
DB5 - had to sell after divorce (did the Scottish malts regulatory in it)
Dino 246 GT - sold to give my son a private schooling
Alfa Romeo Junior Zagato (nope never let me down ever)
Triumph TR5 (was a daily for 4 years, yes they rust)
Landrover series 2

To bring balance, here are the downsides of a 981 GT4.

It's loud and occasionally pisses off my neighbours
It can only carry one wife or child and one dog at a time, it is best enjoyed without these features
The coffee holding thing is not very good
It scrapes it's nose sometimes over speed bumps in London (but cheap to replace).
It can't carry very much to the rubbish tip in it
It is poor off road
People come up to me at petrol stations, motorway services stations and ask to sit in it and talk about it
I am a very tiny bit stiff when I get out of it after driving to Spa or Glasgow
The PCM is a bit crap but can be deleted with a shelf

GO AND BUY ONE - GOOD LUCK

This is a great post smile

My own modified car is currently for sale with Car-Iconics but I'm very relaxed about whether or not it does sell. I'm tracking a 944 Turbo Cup at the moment and have decided that if it's not gone by the end of October I'm going to keep it and do the modifications that I always said were a step too far because if I did, it couldn't easily be returned to standard and might therefore be slow to sell !

Mine was dyno'd at 430bhp / 340 lb/ft and on the exhaust side I went for a wider bore M&M exhaust (as used by Manthey) which with race cats noise tests at around 3dB less than the standard exhaust ... and was supposed to give an extra 10bhp on the live re-map that was done.

So what work will I now do ? Change of final drive possibly also with the overdrive 6th (it is one of the very first cars with the splined third gear), lightened flywheel and whilst I'm at it, check / replace the LSD and clutch ...

A gearing change of 10% emulates 475bhp and 375 lb/ft with standard gearing ... less the extra gear changes which let's be honest, are fun !

My OEM+ 981 GT4 has gone to a new home…. and I loved it, for nearly 40k miles and 50 trackdays, in my stewardship. They are great cars… FULL of character, charm and very easy to use and run.

Although I have recently departed the ranks of these two (Richard + Chris) … I haven’t strayed too far… the journey continues, and the MR lives!

Owned mine for 18 months, came into it from 6 years with a 996t, was looking for a 997 GT3 but just couldn't find one. A mate suggested I try a GT4 (he's had one for 4 years) and he wasn't wrong. What a car. The noise is addictive, it's a hooligan of a thing and encourages bad behaviour.

Did over 3k miles in it through Europe over the summer, in buckets, and I can still walk. Fantastic car, but i'm mulling over trading it for a 981 Box S, as I feel like it's 'mission accomplished' with the GT4 and a very enjoyable tick in the box.

Have a parking break issue on mine also! good to know they replaced it under warranty as they said its unlikely to be covered.

Warranty was with supplying dealer not Porsche, sorry for not clarifying that.
Quite a saga getting the ecu to re-adapt the new actuators apparently, the garage kept the car a day and a half before it was all set up correctly.
Bring back the goold ol' handbrake cable lol

I used Ken at Nine Excellence to tune and instal the Dundon hears, intake, IPD, over axle pipes with Cats and a GT3 exhaust. It is supremely loud and fails sound everywhere, so I use a JCR noise reducing tips as required.

I bought the Dundon kit over time mainly used from the US. X rates not helpful now. Cargraphic v good I hear and Kline too.

Ken did a good job and I would recommend him and his firm.

He does 'real world' testing so timed runs on the same piece of road but of course, cold air significantly helps power output.

I separately dynoed the car at Surrey Rolling Road on a Dynodynamics rolling road. Sadly I did not do a before but the guys there have done other std GT4s.

They told me that the std ones usually showed a 'normalised' 345-350hp on their set up and, therefore a 35hp correction to the Porsche data.

They got a normalised peak of 385 and 395 using the exhaust/headers and exhaust/headers/intake. It was cold on the day I did the full set up (7deg C) and they told me that 'un normalised' the run showed 425hp).

It's a lot of money for 35-40hp but I have enjoyed the process and believe I can resell the Dundon stuff into the US if I ever decide to sell (can't see this happening).

Send me a PM if you wnat a couple of images of the dyno runs.
Tried to pm you but not allowing emails apparently?

GT4s are like London buses apparently. Nothing in the South West for several weeks and then 2 turn up in 3 days, both within a few 100 yards in Exeter. PTS colour at the Main dealer and overnight a blue GT4 with Hendy Performance.

I wonder how the excess of 718 GT4s (over 100 currently and rising) in the market is going to effect 981 GT4 values long term.

I have zero interest in 718 - I think the steering is not half as good compared to 981s personally but I get most people will probably assume the later car is a better car for them.

Thoughts?

There are over 100 and rising 718’s for sale - but for many potential buyers about 75% of those can be discounted and ignored immediately because of rubbish poverty spec…..ie: comfort seats, steel brakes, boring standard colour.
I had a 981 GT4 but just didn’t bond with it at all and sold it after a few months, the pdk 718 GT4 is far superior imho- the extra gear is welcome…..and Porsche generally don’t make new models inferior to the previous one.

Cat in hells chance the 981 will ever eclipse 718's in value, they are just way too similar. 718 prices will push them down simple as that. If I were looking for a GT4 I wouldn't even consider a 981 at the current price difference, let alone any sort of crossover.

No point trying to justify the proportionate price difference between the 981 GT4 and 718 GT4 the majority of this difference is broadly down to the simple fact that most used 981 GT4s for sale are around twice the age of most used 718 GT4s for sale.

Anyone doubting this just needs to look at the proportionate price difference between a similar age and spec 991.1. GT3 and 991.2 GT3 PDK despite the fact that there are only 332 991.1 GT3s v c600 981 GT4s.

No question both 981 and 718 GT4 are great cars and both have advantages and disadvantages depending where your preferences lie. Having had both cars from new I prefer the 718 for a number of reasons the main one being the better engine with far better economy and would always pay more for a newer car with better tech and warranty but each to their own.

The usual rise in the number of used Porsche GT cars hitting the market is nothing new at this time of year happens year in year out and what happens is the best cars always sell at the best money by Spring at the latest approaching peak buying season and typically the cars remaining are those of weird/poverty spec with possible issues.

My biggest 1st world issue is not knowing if it will get on the drive! We have a 350Z with Rocket Bunny kit on the drive and he has to reverse on. Not many GT4s in South Devon to flag down to test the parking. The white GT4 at Better Performance (which is within 4 hour roundtrip) would look good on the drive if it could get on it.
And keeping to the theme of the OP, that GT4 has also started drifting down in price, but is 4 months of your life without a GT4 worth £2k?
Just starting to look at GT4s, that one at Better Performance is the only clubsport I've seen under £70k - has it always been at that price?

I've not seen any CS under 70k as yet. Prices do look to have softened a little. I wouldn't pay a premium for ridiculous low mileage given they are a fairly robust car.
