Good article and a lot of its content reminds me as to why I prefer my 981 Spyder as a fast road car to my previous 981 GT4.

GTS is the new Cayman R imo.

981 Spyder is a lifestyle car, the steering and standfit p zero offer zero for the driver and the electrics are old school. It’s a 981 GTS with a very detuned 3.8, and really nothing more. It’s def not a fast road car !!!

My GT4 was a far far better drivers than than my 981 Spyder with far better suspension and electronics along with much better steering feel, you cannot compare both cars.

But a new 4.0l GTS will be better than a 981 Spyder in every way bar looks.

You make me laugh. All Porsche cars can be considered lifestyle cars.
Love my 981 spyder, sound acceleration and ability.
Brings a smile to my face when I drive it.
If you don’t like a car, why continually criticise others who do?

you can like a car, don’t make it a drivers car.
I loved my 981 Spyder as a lifestyle car and it was my other half fav car. But the hyper bole for it as a “drivers” car on piston heads is bks :-)
Some will love a Macan don't make one a drivers car but is still a great car.
When people admit what they own a car for on here it will be a better place. From my last 5 Porkers it was the worse car to drive but we still used it for weekend trips out, but I never used it for a lads fun drive out.

What makes a drivers car is subjective. Debating is not your strong point, is it?

My favourite pick currently of the 718 is the BGTS keep the price close to £70k and you got a winner. Personally I wouldn't spec. Gts interior as not imo needed,it was needed on 981 to set apart from S. Dont think they really needed to call it a Gts just 718/ 4.0. Hence the £2k Gts pack waste of money.
All above IMO

Pretty much sums up how I thought of them
GTS is a fantastic car but more of a daily
GT4 is just epic for a blasting around for fun
I guess pay your money and take your pick

Good article from Frankel.... confirms what I have been saying ref people needing to buy the right car for their actual usage and not just buying on the badge...if they want to avoid disappointment.

718 GTS 4.0 is the blueprint for the new ‘Touring’ models... same engine as the GT car, but road focussed chassis and suspension.
We haven’t seen a 992 GTS yet.... hazard a guess as to why?…… we’ll see.

Closing comments on the 718 GT4 vs 981 are telling.....
As I said when I drove 718 GT4... spec it with normal seats and you may as well be in a GTS anyway....it requires buckets. Some of the special projects, skunk-works feel has been refined out of the 718 GT4 IMO, but makes it slightly easier to drive or live with overall.

I think it's only more memorable because it was the first of its kind. The 718 is a .2 version so it won't have the same initial impact.

I'd still take a 4.0 GTS or GT4 over a standard 981 GT4, whatever Frankel says, as the engine is a major improvement.

I wasn’t impressed with 981 Spyder steering when I test drove recently, which disappointed me because I liked everything else, it did occur to me whether it could be improved with Cup 2s, anybody tried it?

For me an expensive car has to look right, if it makes me turn round and do a double take when walking away, so much the better.

In that regard the GTS is quite simply crap - to me anyway, it has zero visual impact. By contrast, the GT4 is however stunning to look at from any angle. Especially in bright vibrant colours, it has a whole “junior supercar” vibe the GTS can only dream about.

It really isn’t.

The reason Motorsport Porsches are so damn good is because they don’t think of Aston Martin, Audi, BMW or Mercedes in terms of opposition; they think of other Porsches
This is the really perceptive point in the article

Yep the Spyders steering is let down to a degree by tbe crappy Pirellis be interesting to see how cups would transform.

Whilst the stock 981 GT4 is more focused than the Spyder there is really little difference in rapidity between the cars for road use and the Spyder is actually more usable for weekends away due to better front clearance.

Worst thing about the Spyder is the farty exhaust fakery in sport plus whereas the 981 GT4 sound authentically good at low or high revs despite its boggo strangled C2S engine and thirst for fuel.

GTS whilst a decent package holds little appeal imo and the GT4 is easily worth the few extra ££ no contest.

Wow I’ve heard it all now... the 981 spyder not a drivers car... I loved mine. Amazing sound (pops aside), great chassis, roof off, amazing looks...

Poor steering feel was the weak point and I was going to try cups before I moved on.

A GT4 is the car I desire and lust after...... love the looks too.

But not interested in tracking and am interested in using the car for every single possible trip, long or short, every day of the week.

So I’ve ordered a GTS and am super super happy with that.

Each to their own circumstances!

Absolutely and good for you.

I agree with what someone said further up the thread about the GT4 being like a mini supercar. That’s one of the reasons why I really wanted one for so long coupled with the fact they are, so I read and watch, an amazing car. I’ll definitely test drive one but a GTS is just a wonderfully engineered machine no doubt about that!
