Are not some of the most iconic cars least shouted about early on in their launch? Ie 964 RS was hated by the press and a good one use to be had for a packet of crisps! Personally the only Cayster I see hitting iconic status is the 987Spyder its the modern 356!

The R will be as iconic as the 987Spyder. Both of them will be far more iconic then the GT4.

The simple answer is no so why wast your time posting negativity to those who are interested in the notion ?

My 981GT4 is far from standard so I have no skin in this game ... but it is a fabulous car for many more people than a GT3.

As for collectability (and they are holding their value very well), I agree that the lightweight and lithe 987 Spyder is truly special (more so than the 981 which is poorer than the 718 Spyder in my view).

Then to the question, manual or PDK. For number the PDK is the scarce one ... I know where there is a car with less than 1000 miles on the clock but asking for around £60k ?

I owned and tracked a CR/PDK/PCCB ... which I loved, but the 981GT4 is to my mind significantly better ...

Seen the car you mention got all excited until I saw it was a PDK, if it was a manual I would have been all over it, treated it as a new car and enjoyed as intended!
I think the chap who has done over 100k in his has had the best 'value' than any garage queen and has iconic memories!
Never live in the past, don't look to the future but live for now because memories are priceless

I’ve had and enjoyed both GT4 variants. Whilst the 718 was faster, better engine, more competent on track, I think I preferred the 981 for the experience. Especially on the road.

I think it’s a future classic for sure, but in the mean time it’s meant to be driven and enjoyed.
Interesting commentary.

Indeed smile

I'm the other way and prefer the increased performance and less ragged feel of the 718. It ties in with my dislike of old/older cars whereas others absolutely love them.

There's no right or wrong answer, just what's better for you.

I would like to try a 718 but from the reviews I think I would prefer a 981

May become iconic in ones mind, but there are far too many of them in existence for the iconic status to mean iconic prices. so if future value is not your angle here then yep probably will, if not already, be iconic to a relatively small audience.
Cars don't have to made in small volumes to become iconic cars, in fact many iconic cars were made in volume.

Rare doesn't always equal desirable ie a 987 BE same engine upgrades as R, same spyder wheels etc less manual numbers but £10-15k cheaper. Some of the most iconic Porsches have not been sky high prices from the start ie the 911 club sport it is only in recent years that prices have climbed from lows of £25k but that one is rare also.

Not that you're in the slightest bit biased, judging by your username wink

We've probably got another 40-50 years to wait before we find out the answer..

All depends on future regs. If it becomes really hard to use a combustion car in future, they’ll become very niche toys trailered to the odd event. In which scenario, values will perhaps crater. Barns up and down the country full of snazzy metal, currently. Won’t be worth much if they’re almost impossible to use.

But it’s hard to predict. Maybe the shift to electric will be such that there’s no need to ban ICE cars from every town, as the vast majority of cars will already be clean. Of course, if everyone goes electric then even without formal restrictions, fuelling infrastructure for ICE could contract quite dramatically etc

Anyway, hard to say what will happen other than factors beyond the GT4’s specific characteristics will have a major role to play.

What is everyone's thoughts on the 981 GT4 now?
I love mine and even though I have a 992 GTS as well I will never sell the GT4 but will sell the 992 GTS happily as the Cayman is that good

I bought a 981 gt4 about a month ago and absolutely love it. Completely raw and not like anything else you can buy today imo. My previous Porsche was a 992 gts which I also loved but completely different proposition - more refined, faster and obviously tech. My current practical car is a gr Yaris which I also love to bits. I’ve borrowed my girlfriend’s Audi this weekend to take fishing and I’m absolutely blown away by how dull it is. I suppose I’m spoiled but scared me how I couldn’t go back to a “normal” car.

The 981 gt4 is an event to drive and I think it will be seen fondly as time goes by

Holy thread resurrection!
Mark 1s are always that little bit more special than mark 2s. Golf gti , lotus cortina etc.
The added bonus of 981 gt4 is no gpf and that engine is proven and its short comings can be ironed out. Also rarer than 718 version

Not always.

Ref 991.1 v 991.2 GT3 as just one example of many.
