987 coolant crossover pipes replacement

My 987 has been leaking slightly from the front for all the time I've had it (4 years).

I'm thinking that it's going to be this year's 'big job', just wondering what sort of costs will this involve and also any recommendations for places to take it? (I'm in West Yorkshire but willing to travel)

My 997 GT3 is in at Porsche Torque this week getting them done. I've been quoted £900 which seems to be the going rate in and around London.

Depending on where it is leaking from, i.e. where the pipes join the main cross over section. They can sometimes just change the pipes and not need to change out the whole cross-over section. This requires the front sub-frame to be dropped which is where some of the extra labour charges are involved (plus re-doing the geo settings).

Had it done on my 987 18 months ago, dropping the front subframe, at a Porsche specialist. Also had front to back air con pipes changed and it was £1400 of which it looks from the invoice it was circa 900-1000 for the coolant pipe work and the remainder for AC.

Just had mine done-about 800 quid all in with a low temp thermostat fitted.

If you are getting them done with sub frame dropped get them to check the power steering rack for leaks as it's easier done together. Rack can be reconditioned.

Just had this done on my 987.1 S

£795 + VAT.

They changed:

Coolant Crossover Pipes
Coolant Crossover hose
Crossover coolant connecting sleeve
Crossover coolant hose LH
Crossover coolant hose RH
Crossover coolant hose supply LH
Crossover coolant hose supply RH
Crossover coolant transverse tube return
Crossover coolant transverse supply

Plus some other bits etc.

I had mine done December last year and it was ~£700 all up. That was for all four rubber hoses to the radiator’s and the aluminium crossover pipe and fitting. The plastic feeds to and from the engine were fine.

When they leak. If they are not leaking, then I wouldn't worry about them.

It is highly unlikely a leak will turn into a catastrophic loss of coolant because the reason it is such a pig of a job is the hose connectors that rust and cause the leak, seize into the aluminium cross over pipes and cannot be removed, hence the need to change them as well.

Just resurrecting this thread as I have been advised this needs doing on mine. Would it definitely be okay to leave it until if/when I start to see signs of coolant loss? It seems to me this is the kind of job that actually may never really need doing if the corrosion has effectively welded the joints shut.

They will eventually leak, mine started off as a weep. I kept an eye on it and it took about 9 months before it developed into a leak that would leave a few drops on the floor.

If the cross over pipes are done and the subframe lowered, check the front driver side brake pipe for corrosion. Easy to do at the same time but impossible otherwise.
I did my front pipes on the driveway but you really need a lift.

Need to look underneath, well in the wheel arches. If you put the wheels on full left lock you get a good view of the passenger side ones and right lock for drivers side.
