I have a manual 2.7. It's a lovely drive and as well as being mechanically safer, it also scrapes into the lower road tax bracket, which is nice.
I think that's only true for the 5 speed model? I think if you find one of the 6 speed 987 2.7's they're somehow a higher tax band.Jayho said:

I had a 2.9 boxster - I ended up with a 6.5k bill due to a timing chain problem. Not a "common" problem but imo while Porsches of this era are fantastic cars to drive their engines are not reliable. At least in my experience.
Also imo don't bother with an aftermarket warranty - just put money in to a slush fund. I had a supposed premium level of warranty from the "orange" break down company. The actual underwriter of the warranty is another company who will do anything they can to get out of paying for a problem.

This is what the original poster should get in my opinion.

I've got a 987.1 3.4 Manual. Bought it earlier this year, with a clear borescope check.
I've since fitted:
- Low Temp Thermostat
- Center Radiator
- Deeper (0.6l) and X51 style baffled sump
- Millers 10w50 NT+ CFS Oil
That is more than adequate of an insurance policy against bore score.
(I'll live to regret this post).

I had a 987.1 3.4 that used to guzzle oil. Had a borescope carried out by a very reputable specialist who gave it the all clear on the borescope. I put the oil consumption down to the bores becoming ovalised due to the mileage - 80k+.I've since fitted:

- Center Radiator

Timing chain stretch on one side of the engine. The car was still driving but it was not sounding very nice at all - a loud tapping sound. Required the whole engine to be removed and dismantled. All fine once repaired but it put me off of the car tbh, I struggled to enjoy it. I'd specifically chosen the 2.9 engine in the hope that the car would be reliable. The warranty company made out like they'd cover the cost but when it came down to it, they put the problem down to normal wear and tear - the car had approx 45k miles on and full service history from main dealer and specialist indie - imo not wear and tear but premature failure. I argued, they fought back. I'd just become a company director and life was very full on and stressful (as well as moving house for this opportunity) so ended up just paying the bill and moving on.
I still feel bitter and wish I'd taken it to a court but at that time I didn't have the capacity to do so.

I’d go Gen2 CS personally and wait for a good manual to come along.
Get a good one now as the prices will start going up before long and you might be tempted to keep it as a non depreciating asset.
Pretty fanciful. Gen 2 prices are falling right now. Don't see them leaping up any time soon.Get a good one now as the prices will start going up before long and you might be tempted to keep it as a non depreciating asset.
Here's a manual from a specialist dealer for £15k. OK, it's high miles, but even at this mileage, would have been a fair bit more even 12 months ago.

Don't think the styling is widely liked, which is what I think will hold bsck values in the medium to long term.
