£6k budget - 928, 944 or 924?
Discussion
Id be happier saying that Ive had twenty years experience with the cars, spent a lot of time looking at them and learning about them, and that the strengths of the 924s design have slowly grown on me.
It took a good while before I appreciated the design and saw past the gaping arches and apparently overly narrow track. In fact, I didnt appreciate them at all until I bought one to tinker with when the 968 was a few years old and I only really saw them as I do now when I started looking for a 924 Turbo ten years after that.

928 all the way. The only car Porsche have ever designed starting from a blank sheet of paper and making everything the best it can be. Tales of unreliability are overblown, all old Porsches are unreliable if not properly maintained and all of them can generate bills out of all proportion to their cost price.

Id go Boxster S!
I'd completely agree if you were talking about the Boxster concept shown at Earls Court if I remember correctly. Just gorgeous but real thing wasn't as nice in terms of design. Again one of Porsche's finest moments after the 928 in terms of design. Don't get me wrong the 356, 901, and 904 prettiest of them all but I'm trying to be persuaded that black is white and the 924 (one of Porsches ugliest cars ever in original form etc) is prettier than a 944 itself not one of Porsches finest designs but nicer than a 924 IMO!any way here's some Boxster concept porn

Good suggestion - if you want a convertible. You can pick up a good condition one within the OP's budget, although there will be lots out there needing ££ spending. They sound great as well (much nicer than a 944). I think the Boxster S is *the* bargain Porsche right now (but then i would - I bought one..)barchetta_boy said:

The thread title says £6k, the first post says £5k. Which is it, because there are 3 x 968s in the P classifieds for £5500-£6k asking price.
This^^^^ provided they aren't total sheds. Leaving aside the turbo I'd have a 968 over a 944 every time. I enquired about a purple 968 a few years ago, turned out it had a whack on a front corner. If possible I'd stick any potential purchase into one of those cheap 4 wheel alignment places for a quick check before buying.andy97 said:

Oops. Thanks for pointing that out. The budget is £6k max but that must include a bit of money held back for repairs. A 968 at £5.5k is a lovely thing but that leaves £500 back which leaves a big risk if anything goes pop or needs a major service.
[edit]
And no thanks on the Boxster. It's a rag top and 986 seats aggravate a chronic back condition.

£500 for ever, or £500 until when?
£500 for about 6 months.GC8 said:
Spend a little more on a 924 Turbo and you wont regret it.
Sounds good to me but I've not found many for sale - there seem to be more 944 turbos TBH.The speed / rapidity doesn't concern me too much (the daily driver is very quick), it's the handling I'm interested in.
This seems quite nice
