I will soon be on the lookout for a 2+2 as a daily, one of these has just dropped into my mind!

Any thoughts on the daily part?

Also, prices seem to be all over the place for similar spec cars, are the cheaper ones real pigs, or is it just mileage?

Sorry, only just noticed the full thread title, I'm referring to the rest of the 928 range smile

Honest to god I think some people are just pumping the values or trying it on rather than all the cheaper cars being dogs.

I have an S4 as a daily and cannot be faulted. In 18 months I've had to replace a Bosch relay. Fine balance, and enough grunt.
As with air cooled stuff the days of cheap 928's seem to be long gone. A sub £10K car is likely to be a project.
Lots of owners restoring these cars now - which is good to see.
A GT is more invigorating - but only use mine for long weekend runs.

Every train has its passengers...

The GTS 5-spd dynamically is the better car than a 964 Turbo, yet a 964 Turbo is £100k...

It is also about ability to put money into it, rather than desire - if £50k for you or me on a GTS seems ludicrous, I know enough people who see it as an absolute bargain in light of the contents of their garage, which may easily topple £1m.

I am still kicking myself for not buying a Lambo Diablo when they were in the £70k bargain bin area. Now they are £150k they are beyond my means. Can I see their prices coming down before I cannot afford one anymore? No way...

I bought a 95 GTS with 19,000 miles for £19,000. Did 20,000 fantastic miles in it and sold it for £17500.
Should have kept it - along with every 911, particularly the 2.2s.
But I was getting bored with them - such is the curse of a true petrolhead. It's finding and buying nice cars that I love most. After 12 months I am always looking at ads again.
Makes my wife very nervous smile

My friend has a similar disposition. It's a good job he can now laugh about the 1967 911 S he sold for peanuts a few years ago, as he was in a rush to get "something modern" biggrin

I have threatened to sell my gtsm for 4 years now, but every time I wipe the dust off it I just have not persuaded myself to do it.
I recon 2017 will be the year to either sell it of use it.

With the way 928 values have gone, I suspect now is the time to sell.

Can you ellaborate on that ? do you mean, now is the time to sell because values have peaked ?. Or if you mean, now is the time to sell.., as they go for good prices, then that would be a very bad move, as prices for good 928's are still increasing every month .

My view, for what it is worth, is that values are peaking. 5 years ago you could hardly give a 928 away. Before then I remember turning up at a Porsche meet in my 928 GT and being shunned by all the 911 owners. 928s are now caught up in the classic car bubble, and I just don't believe the sentiment is there to keep their values high. 15k for a GTS a few years back compared with over 60k now.

There two completely different cars, in fact its amazing that they are made by the same manufacturer they are so different in character. Perfect foil to a 928 GTS would be something like a 2.7RS or similar lightweight recreation (ST please santa).

This is exactly what I would say too. When I bought my 996.1 GT3 CS I thought about selling the GTS Manual, but then the cars don't compete for my attention. They are perfect companions. Any true Porsche enthusiast should have a 928, it is as simple as that. And a 944, and a 924, and a Panamera, and a Cayenne wink

Yes and no...

If the '92 burns oil, you are in for a major pain... New rings are best part of £900 from OPC. Drilling the oil return holes properly is a must and therefore an expense. New gaskets are £300 from Rose Passion, new bearings, you may want to do the heads - valve seals and maybe guides. Also, the 95 car will have the stronger 2R type rods - Porsche Service Bulletin stipulates that you must replace the 1R rods if the engine is opened. Personally, I think that is an overkill - yet to see bent 1R rods.

Also, the above prices are for Autos I think. Actually, would love to get my hands on a fair GTS in any form for £16k...

I doubt very much that 928 values will be dropping this year of all years because 2017 is the 40th anniversary of the Porsche 928.

In terms of 928 values, take a look at the Hagerty Classic Car Values app http://apps.hagerty.com/ukvaluation/index.html which incidentally values a 1990 928 S4 in excellent condition at £28,400 and a 1995 928 GTS model in excellent condition at £40,100.

I personally think the 928 values are nowhere near their peak considering how much they originally cost compared to modern day values - you only have to look at average prices of a Ferrari or Lamborghini, or indeed a Porsche 911 to appreciate that that values of the 928 are still well undervalued.

Now is probably the best time to grab a 928 before the weather changes for the better and the 40th anniversary celebrations start in earnest.
