I thought the same.

I am the least 'push the envelope' type of guy, but even I couldn't justify 30-40mins for a 3.5ml commute. I'd have to consider walking or cycling. Cycling would be a chunk quicker, I'd imagine.

Disclaimer: I have cycled my 8mile (15-20mins in rush hour) commute a few times in the past and it's the least pleasant experience I've encountered, but for the above distance and time? Wow...

My gf needs a tall car with boot space for heavy large bags used for her job, she started talking about a Q2 or Q5 as meant easier to get things in and out of. (Q3 too dated)

Naturally I turned convo to a Macan, which has her interested. Standard 2.0 would do. She loves the luxury of Porsches. Note that refresh due. Worth it still in non S form?

I did point out a golf or A3 is all she really needs but boot height is a the thing. She isn't interested in estates.
Given the cars you have listed in this thread really don't seem to really compete (different classes, different price brackets and so on) I am guessing budget is not a massive concern (as in there is flexibility) and it will really just come down to whatever she actually likes when she has a poke around with the cars themselves, yes?

If that's the case, I would suggest making a day of it and going around all the various dealers with her and seeing which one actually tickles her fancy. That's what we did back when we ended up with my OH's Q5. When we set off that morning, the Evoque was actually the front runner in her mind. It was me who insisted that she had a little look around alternatives.

It went something like this:

- VW Tiguan: Non-starter, really. Exterior looks good, but the interior felt cheap and plasticy. That was a "Nope" almost immediately. She commented that the VWs we have had in the past never felt that 'cheap' inside and that with the current gen Tiguan VW seem to have let things slip in that area.
- Porsche Macan: I liked it but she hated the cluttered feel of the interior. "Too many buttons...all seems a bit unnecessary and fiddly". Hmmm, ok....
- RR Evoque: Not surprisingly, she really liked this and we started making enquiries. The salesman was a knob...comments like (when we spec'd the window tints), "People don't usually go for those as they are a bit chavvy". And that was just one of his helpful insights into our desired spec. Needless to say, we left before my OH punched him out.
- Audi Q5 S-Line Plus (model important because...): We went looking to get an SQ5, but in the showroom was a high-spec Q5 (as mentioned) which caught her eye. OH instantly liked the car. Had a fantastic spec and 'gave great showroom' (looked the biz under the lights etc. Good presence). Sales guys were genuinely helpful and easy to have a chat with and honestly felt like they wanted the customer to get the best deal, regardless of the reality behind the smiles. It goes a long way! We then got offered a great deal and bought the car right there.

So go round and you never know what she might like!

Another lesson for Stratstone LR - you lost TWO sales as a result of one salesman being a completely arrogant 'old school style' car salesman. We would have bought an Evoque right there and then had he done his job properly. Similarly, when it came time for me to order my RRS, I would have come to you and not farmed the order out to my next nearest dealer (150m away!)

The return journey takes 10 minutes and if the kids are on holiday it's 15 minutes to the office. I would walk or cycle if the office had a shower, but for half of the year it is a minimum of 20c when I'd be setting off for work and can be up to 28 with a decent whack of humidity. I normally set off early or late when i can to minimise my commute.

Phantom you cycle really quickly!! I can cover 10 miles in 33-35 mins in London and I consider that fast.

Back to cars your assumption is correct, budget not main consideration. She went to see RR re evoque but not too keen - guess what salesman put her off. She looked at X1/3 bit meh, salesman again. Audi sales impressed her but looked mainly at Q2. I put her off there as I thought it’s ugly. Went went to Audi City London and nearly went for Q2. Q3 dated now. I like the Q5 so will run that past her again. She loves Porsche interiors, though this will be a poverty spec, still our joint fav. I thought Evoque would have been shoe in but she isn’t keen. She doesn’t love our salesman at OPC but last car from them so hoping they can do something.

Guessed there might be a reason like you needed to go on to do things later.

Ha ha - I just realised that my initial comment could be read that I cycle that distance in 10-20mins. No, the 10-20mins is what it usually takes me to do those 8 miles in the car. biggrin

Takes me rather longer on the bike...even tho I live in Northumberland/Tyneside and the only thing I have to be aware of on my cycle is the lyrca crew who rip past you like they are doing a stage of The Tour De France, not their journey to work. biggrin

It's actually quite a pleasant ride on a sunny morning...but for the fact that (as you point out) you know work is your destination and you will have to shower and get changed etc etc...

I can’t believe how shocking the fuel economy is on them especially the diesel, I have spoke to the dealer about the macan but for some reason the factory is shutting for 6 month???? So no cars till November/December apparently

I am quite liking the look of the new X3 as well if I’m honest a fully loaded M40i is 58k after discounts BUT I’m guessing it won’t hold the value like the macan will

Any idea why the factory isn’t priducing cars for 6 month?

Also had another look at the evoque and apparently it’s just a fixed panoramic roof which is abit crap I like to open the roof so that’s the evoque our the window!

I very nearly bought the rs3 but the missus has told me she wants another child in the next few yrs meaning we won’t get 3 kids in a rs3 so it would end up not been used and traded in anyway so defiantly going down the route of a macan or x3 or something similar

I know the petrol engines like a drink, especially when exercised, but the diesel is excellent - 30-35 mpg when pressing on, 40+ on a cruise.

Reports are that its for petrol particulate filters. Does affect Macan, won't affect every model, may not be as long as 6 months.

Our OPC said no petrol cars for few months whilr they install new emissions testing equipment or some such.

Either way gf test drove a Macan, absolutely loved it so placed order. Didn't drive 2ltr but the diesel however we just drove around town for an hour and she loved the ease of driving. Wasn't a speed test. I was impressed how refined the diesel was though.

I thought it was supremely comfortable, nice padded seats unlike X3/X5, GLC etc. Just really nice place to be.

Although gf doesn't totally click with our sales guy he really guided her to a nice spec without going crazy. Arrives in April.

Depending on the age of the other 2, you might find it's not the easiest thing in the world to get three kids in the back of the Macan, either - assuming one fully baby seat and two other boosters.

Stick with 2, mate - it's a lot easier. wink Ha ha. My sister had 3 and they've only jut been able to start getting cars they actually want not that the kids are all older and no longer going places as a five-some.

Nature doesn't want you to have any more than two kids. Why do you think we only have two arms? biggrin

All joking aside - make sure you can test the back seat of the Macan - I don't remember the couple I have driven having any more of a back seat than any normal saloon car.

Have you considered the current gen XC90? Bags of space and they really do look very good these days.

Got to be honest I don’t like the dash of the Volvo

I adore the macan and the x3 though

I don’t think we will have another, swmbo is going through the motions as our youngest is 3 in September so will be starting nursery and then she will not have much to do until picking them both up so will get bored! I think she’s got very comfortable been a housewife! She basically retired at 28 and she turns 33 in April, alright for some I suppose

We looked at the new Tiguan 2016 but the steering wheel was too far canted forward for a comfortable driving position.

Liked the look of the Disco Sport and F-Pace and booked the latter at JLR Leicester. In the showroom before the drive, the first thing my wife did was peer in the open boot of their showroom F-Pace and lift the floor cover - handle came away...

...then she opened the passenger door and a step slid out from under the car, making it very awkward to get in...

...then we went for a drive in one. "you have it for 2 hours" the salesman said. Out onto the dual carriageway, drove a mile, round the roundabout, back to the showroom, handed keys back! What a horrible BARGE of a thing! Awful...

...went back in to look at Disco Sport, pressed the tailgate opener... nothing. Again... nothing. Had to manually lift it. Not impressed. Walked away. I have several clients who work at JLR and passed on my experience to the "lead coach" on the F-Pace project. Worst thing was that when we told the salesman we'd "broken" his car he said "Oh, don't worry we know about the broken handle."

My concerns over JLR quality, and the comments from my clients "we're not quite there yet" have made me vow not to buy any of their products for a few years yet.

Looked at Nissan Qashqai, but it was very plasticky and no-one wanted to assist us so we walked out of the showroom.

So... off to see an X1 and my wife (for who the car was intended, after two Audis prior) loved it. Had it 18 months now and apart form the EGR valve issue, and white cars getting sh*t one by hundreds of flies (won't buy white again) it's been great. 2.0d xDrive xLine. 42mpg average.
She loves: the comfy SPORTS seats (standard ones are too short with no adjustment); the automatic tailgate (have dogs); performance. I quite like its practicality although it's not a driver's car (no BMW is now, not since the E46), but dislike when it took autonomous control from me when driving and tried to kill me and my son. Yes, "driverless cars" are already amongst us - nobody at BMW told us about this, nobody there cared when I reported the car had taken over from me.

What did it do? The x3 has a partial autonomous driving mode
