Many many cars NEED a very specific battery removal/ecu reset procedure.....gone are the days of just pulling it off (ohhwwer) and connecting another one up.

Halfords did mine a few years back on a 2003 Cayenne - I couldn't be bothered to lift the passenger seat etc - although I had to guide them.

They connected another battery to the jump points in the engine bay while they did it - so no need to recode anything.

On a 981 Cayman, I changed the battery for one exactly the same make, model and capacity as a Porsche supplied one, except it did not have a Porsche serial number. It therefore could not be programmed in via PIWIS.

I was warned that functions would cease to function, and they did on the drive home

No stop/start - Great
No Cruise - ok
PSM error - not so bad

Also, car would not know what charge the battery had and wouldn't charge it properly..

Next morning, start car - all back working, car seems to charge battery OK and it's 6 months since new battery was fitted.

The Porsche price includes fitting and that is scheduled around an hour's labour so >£100 for fitting.

Can Halfords fit one?

They fitted one to my Merc and forgot to secure the battery properly, otherwise OK but do they have properly trained staff at all locations?

Anyone can change a battery. You only need a few basic tools. Read in the handbook there are very clear instructions if you want some reassurance.

Nothing will need coding. But you may have a few errors on the dash when you start it up again. These will clear though after leaving it running for a few minutes or taking it for a drive.

Buy a nice Bosch one online and fit it yourself.

As an example of why that is wrong, PSA cars have a specific procedure....it is not in the handbook. The BSI and some ECU's can be damaged if not followed correctly as well as a good few sensors to get confused.

Removing/reconnecting a battery is like shutting down a PC these days, lots of ECU's need to restart correctly and in order.

rubbish :-) people start cars in the morning over winter with dead battery all the time, prob 100 a day die at a guess.
cars go haywire due to the lack of power but enough to make the car go crazy

changing a battery you have every thing off when you start, you unplug it, and plug a new one in, it's a non issue 20 minute job, 10 of that is finding the spanner.

AA fitted a replacement to mine, £230 all in ... I am a member. Think it was around £270 for non members.

No problems.

Thanks chaps, I have a servicing Halfords auto centre near me, I’m going to try them first if not I’ll try and haggle with my indie who said no coding on a 957.

In what way, you cannot code a battery it has no Ecu :-)

I have changed 20+ batteries I would say inc 3 porkers. Also disconnected all my Porkers batteries to fit ctek plugs, which is the same as changing a battery.

You think the AA and Halfords have piwis lol

It’s the most basic of basic car tasks !

Please note MY post, I was/am talking in "general terms" and not about any specific car....
I used the example of modern PSA cars as such an example and that care is needed with modern cars/removal/resets.

Update - Halfords autocentre (not a store) did it with a Yuasa battery at £145 + £15 and it took them 30 minutes (no loss of codes).

As its 11 years I had no appetite to spend £400 on a battery.

That's inflation for you. When I got my battery changed by them (end of 2013) they charged £6 - Although I would usually do it myself, knowing what a pain it was to get to, £6 seemed like a bargain!

Had a coffee and played on my phone took 25 minutes inc winter check which was free.
Quite impressed to be honest.
If my 07 had Bluetooth and DAB I wouldn't be always looking elsewhere but I know if I paid a grand to get a new radio something would break elsewhere so I'll hang on to it for the next 6 months at least.
