2004 Cayenne T-Track roof bars

I have a pair of original T-Track system roof bars that drop into the roof channels
You are suposed to slide and align with one of the 6 notched out positions.
Then close and lock the plastic end cap covers.
I have attempted this several times but the force required to close the end caps is so great that I am afraid that the plastic will break.
Has anyone experience/advice on fitting this system?
