what, other than good looks and faulty enignes does a 997s
Discussion
A 997 has the intangible factor of being a Porsche.
Mercedes brings to mind well engineered and safe if rather bland and boring saloon cars although in real life this patently isn't the case. However, away from the bubble of car enthusiasts on online forums it's the perception of the marque for a large percentage of the public.
Porsche brings to mind exciting, performance sports coupes, again this obviously isn't the complete story but it is the perception.

I had a days test drive in a 997s and found the engine to be, a bit, dare I say it, gutless, had to. Wring it's neck to get it moving and often having to cha he down a. Couple of. Gears roe overtaking. I guess there's always the turbo, but out of my budget hence going for C63. . I loved the cayman I drove, but again gutless. I just love how the 911 looks.

That is exactly what the gearbox is for. Part of the fun of naturally aspirated engines like the Porsche 6 cylinder is that it can rev out with something to work for. A big glob of mid range torque is great, but it will lack the joy of working the engine. I have realised that so many cars have so much power that they can't really be worked hard or you are going too fast. Sometimes it is just nice to wring a car's neck and keep. Your licence.
I like the C63, had one a few years ago (6.2 with performance pack) and it was always a giggle from the minute you started it up to the moment you’re sliding all over our greasy roads
The 997.2 has it nailed though for quality and drivability. The manual gearbox is very good but I prefer the PDK.
Not sure which model/engine of C63 you’re looking at but depreciation is heavy. All AMGs are.
eta - the C2S certainly isn’t gutless, but if you’re comparing it to the turbo’d C63 then you’ll understand the C63 is a different type of engine / power delivery

Yeah its a naughty car isnt it, i am enjoying mine but think maybe id like a 997s next or a turbo if i can stretch to that and if i can find a warranty company that would cover the engine on the 911.The 997.2 has it nailed though for quality and drivability. I currently have the 2012 c63 coupe in black, no PP, but had a quaife diff fitted and had it mapped. Its making about 515/480 and its such fun, but it doesnt feel as precise as the 997 did. Its pactical though, i can fit 2 road bikes in the back with the seats down and ive had 29mpg out of it cruising at 70-80 down the m4 to work (Bath to London).
I could very easily have another. Would probably try a C63s (4.0) - I thought the move to turbo would ruin it but those that have driven it have been very impressed. Still sounds awesome too. I think the best I got out of my C63 was around 25mpg on 200 mile round trip. Usually in the low teens..

Yeah, its hard not to hoom it around, s+ mode with tc on sport, or if feeling particulalrly daft off totally . I see your car list, youve had some interesting cars . this would be nice , but quite high milage: Love the colour and the side profile, looks beautiful.

It could be a fantastically reliable car, but it also could be a dog. If you're looking at a 997 (especially gen1) you really need to take someone with you that knows how to spot the issues like IMS, bore-scoring, over-revs etc. You could easily get stung for a £10k bill. Pay for a good inspection and aim to get a decent warranty. Rare as rocking horse st, but I'd try and buy a private car with official Porsche Extended Warranty, or look for a gen2 with the stronger dfi engine. Top of the money tree would be a gen2 from an OPC (Official Porsche Centre) with 2yrs Porsche warranty (which you can keep extending until the car is 15yrs old). Not to put you off but 911's can be a money pit.https://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/...
