Thanks for that. I won't be organised in time for that one, but it has got me looking at transportation and storage options.
One of the bits of red tape fun I'll need to pass through is getting a Vehicle Import Approval. This is specific to the car, so I can't apply for it until I know which car, and can take 4-6 weeks to come through - so knowing a decent place to use for short term storage is handy. Have looked at Acorn in Oxon, and will drop a note to Alex at Lizard too.
Stumbled on this thread, yip no probs transport & storage, the one in Abingdon linked above is v local too & I've had 5x 944s (plus a 924S) myself, Inc 2x turbos, so I'm no stranger to 'em. I've actually got a car, well a shell sat at mine that should have been in Sydney by now, but cv messed up the guys plans & I've had it a while.
As we're all car geeks here, you'll like what the shell is, a brand new from factory e30 M3 shell, bought new & sat in a German barn ever since, until my guy bought it & I transported it back to UK. A very very rare thing indeed.

I’m trying to arrange it such that the company doing the shipping and importation manages the whole collection and transportation within UK too, but just in case I win an auction, I’m trying to align things!
PM coming your way shortly…

My mate has a Porsche workshop and always gets cars offered to him. I'll drop you a PM later. Another guy i know has a Porsche breakers over here and one in Australia. Getting one out there wont be a problem.
Thanks for this - all and any help gratefully received!Chatting to a shipping agent this end today, it seems the biggest hurdle might actually be confirming the absence of asbestos. Customs this end are having a bit of a blitz, usually process is for testing to take place in UK, which can cost around GBP1000, and looks mainly at brakes, clutch and head gasket as well as a few other items. If I’m paying that for it to be checked, then I’ll just get them replaced and be done.
Which means I might need a recommended Porsche mechanic…
OK, time to close this - after all that, two 968s suddenly popped up for sale at reasonable prices. I was outbid at auction for one, but snagged the other being sold by a local Porsche specialist. Literally less than 20km from my house. And there was I, willing to buy a car from the other side of the planet...
The only real problem is that its Slate Grey and I wanted a proper colour, but as compensation it does come with a set of 17" Cups, and a fully-stamped service history - yep, all 28 years of it.
For those that might be in the market for a 944 Turbo, I highly recommend getting in touch with the seller of this car, the Guards Red one in Knaresborough...

The car has substantial history and works done by local specialists, RPM and Chris Gregory, far more so than is conveyed in the ad - I was lined up for a PPI next week, with the intention that it would be on a boat soon after. Its not a garage queen, but I don't think it would hold any fears for the next several years.
Thanks to all for the helpful suggestions and pointers, and to the PMs received with offers of help

Without knowing the details, this also looked like a reasonable turbo:

Agreed, and if I’d had my logistics in place in time, I would have been a bidder. https://themarket.bonhams.com/en/listings/porsche/...
Good 944Ts are out there and it seems the UK market is getting a steady trickle
There is a small community of 944 Turbo tuners in Oz, some of whom have turbocharged S2 & 968 motors in 951's (Sean Buchanan) - so you wouldn't be reinventing the wheel.
You'll find a couple of them on the 944 turbo boards on Rennlist.

Yep, in fact Sean, and his dad Bruce, are the guys who looked after my 928 and have provided all the advice I’ve needed so far. As well as Sean having a modified 944T (3.0 block w 2.7 head), Bruce has the cleanest 928S2 you’ll ever see and his daily driver is a 968. What they don’t know about transaxles and working on them might not really be worth bothering with…You'll find a couple of them on the 944 turbo boards on Rennlist.
