964 carrera 2 or 4 owners views

Thinking about a 964. I fancy a targa and would be happy with a left hand drive.
There seem to be more carrera 4 targa.s about than 2 wheel drive. Just wondered what owners views on both models are.

I’ve owned a 964 C4 Cab for the past 18 years. Happy to share more detailed experiences and costs if you’re interested via PM, however, in brief, It’s been both a daily driver and, more lately, a bit of a garage queen. Lots of fun, great to drive (although won’t see which way a modern hot hatch has gone !), and looks great. It has got a lot of charm and personality, but is also an almost 30 year old car, so will definitely need care and attention (and money) to keep it in tip top condition.

I had a Carrera 2 and found her quite heavy. The extra power and torque really didn't make any difference over the 3.2 Carrera I ran side by side due to the extra weight. If i had a choice of the two cars again I'd pick the Carrera 3.2 for its simplicity.

I imagine a C4 targa wont be much different in weight to your GT3! Beautifully built cars. Theres a green targa in the classifieds which looks awesome with its ruffled tan leather. Sounds horrible but very nice IMO

Nice. I keep having a conversation with myself about whether to keep the 964 or whether to upgrade and a 997 GT3 is on the short list.

Over the years, I’ve spent quite a lot on the 964 over and above normal servicing, including £6k-ish for an engine rebuild, £4K on getting the brakes upgraded and abs pump rebuilt, £4K on paintwork to remove some rust that was starting to bubble up, and, most recently, £1.5k on a new hood and sorting out the leather on the seats that had worn.

I do enjoy driving it, but I’ve only been doing circa 500 miles a year in it for the past 3-4 years as it only comes out for the occasional blast to the office or a day trip out with the wife. It now has to compete with my daily, which is a 991 GTS, so I’m a little spoilt for choice.

The 964 C2 is a truly cracking car, I have a lhd and rhd coupe and love them.
In the last 8 weeks I’ve done over 4K miles in them and haven’t driven my GT3 once!I also have a 3.2 Carrera and whilst it’s lovely I would strongly recommend a 964 C2.

I had a 964 C2 targa for 4 1/2 years. Since had a 996T, and now 981 CS. Still miss the glorious sound, wonderful steering feel, small size, and looks.
People will always say the coupe is the one to go for, but a well set up targa (trips to Centergravity help) is still a great drive, and you get to take the roof off.

Hi, I have owned my LHD C2 (Man) since 2002 and even thought I could sell it a buy a 996 Gt3 or Turbo (or later) I cannot imagine the driving experience would be much better IMHO, and the chances of buying another 964 like mine is remote to say the least. It certainly has some old school charm.

I suggest you drive a few and then decide.

I had a 964 C4 that had been "breathed on" with a few subtle mods: g pipe, drilled airbox,rs clutch and lightweight flywheel.

Overall I didn't really rate it vs my 993, largely due to the old-school 4WD system which made the steering heavier and less communicative than the rwd air-cooled cars and that often locked up on the limit, meaning it would just plough you in a straight line. Revised suspension and geo could prob have fixed this somewhat.

One day I want a 964 c2 as believe that would be a truly epic car with none of the issues described above. Not driven one though.
