Any recommendations for reading up on the various 356 models ?
'Buying, Driving and Enjoying the Porsche 356' by James E. Schrager is a great book for identifying the models, getting a feel for the cars, what to look for when buying and how to look after the car once you've got one. Highly recommended.

Thanks I'll order a copy. Got plenty of time to read it not a 2019 project sadly!

Just looking at the book on Amazon it's over £100.00. eek

The price printed on the book is $24.95 so it might be worth looking around.

I'll have a look around. My sister lives in NYC so maybe I can get one over there.

Just brought this Speedster. Made by vintage speedsters in Arizona. 85hp 700kg completely different to my gt3, but it’s so much fun. Just two buttons, windscreen wipers and lights, in discussions for a 2.3 170 hp motor upgrade .

The essence of a 356 is its lightness and easy engine.

For a 170 brake 356 I'd start all over again!

Epic and rare Porsche 356 SC gem attracts. I can imagine this lighter than 911 sports car being a hard to get opponent for the mentioned six pot car. Prices sky rocketed since 10 years from 35k to triple figures

The orange car is owned by Mark Motshagen, built by John Willlhoit it had a 2 litre twinspark engine, then later a 911 engine fitted. Yes the red car is mine, a 1959 A.

That's a great find, thanks for posting. Looking at the kardex in the collection of photos it shows the car was first delivered to an F D Sykes of Milnsbridge which is near Huddesfield. A bit of Googling reveals he was probably Frank Sykes, the rugby union player, capped for England 4 times.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Sykes

Delivered on the 10th December 1959 in metallic silver I can imagine it would have looked like a UFO driving around Huddersfield in the bleak midwinter smile

My farther in law played for Wasps and would have been a contemporary of Frank Sykes, I wonder if they would have known each other, they would most certainly known of each other. Unfortunately I'll never know now.

A really lovely car... though anybody thinking of buying and restoring should own a pair of trousers with the extra deep pockets.

Yes it was his car. Car has actually spent most of its life in the US, recently repatriated.

Quite like the idea of clear coat on the body and an interior restoration. Which is one of the suggested restorations.

That red SC that Dinkel posted up could be a dead ringer for mine!

As my engine is something of a bitsa, I have plans this winter to upgrade it somewhat. My current spec is 1720cc, with an SC cam, and Solex 40Pii carbs, but I have the older type heads with smaller valves which tends to run out of go at about 5,000 rpm.

I have acquired a set of 912 heads, fairly cheaply, with cracks between the plug holes and the valve seats on two cylinders, so these are away at an engineering shop being welded up and machined back. These heads, when matched to a set of lighter pistons with 30° squish angles should perk things up a little.

A perky 356 is a delight. IMO they offer a better drive when properly set up compared to an early SWB F-type 2 litre six pot. They don't have the magnesium to worry about... The lightness.

Within a month I organise a 20-piece Dawn Raid and at least 2 are 356 Porsches.

l replaced my GT3CS for a356a x race car. The GT3 was too quick and big for our poor roads. The 356is a hoot to drive and small and nimble, it runs a 120bhp 912 engine

The Chesil 356 is a replica. From experience I can tell any replica offers a so much different drive to the original thing. A 356 (912) engine revs, for instance...
