True when I had a go in a 72 RS did not feel like a 40 year old car. Unbelievable they are over 50 years old there is a jade green RS I drool over once a month at DK. It was that 72 RS that got me hooked on air cooled. Brakes are shockingly bad though.
They’ve just sold it. Have it on fairly good authority that a previous owner needed rescuing from a pond…..Brakes feel shocking to a modern car but there is enough stopping power, just needs a lot more effort….they don’t stop the car being driven as fast as you’d want on a country road.

spent over 150k euro only for restoration, let alone the cost of the car, and selling for 175K euro. Is it ever worth it?

Far too much when you could have bought a mint 964 C2 at 911Virgin for half the money last week. It really is quite mad the cost of bastardised 911's
100% agree with that.I love the aircooled 911s, but my money would only go into a really nice, immaculate, original, factory spec example.
It would need to look and feel fresh, and perhaps a few subtle upgrades to optimise everything, but I believe this is what will always remain sought after in the long-term.

The real tragedy is that most of them are probably not that good to drive given how low the mileages on them are.
I suspect this ^ is the reality.Far better off buying a standard car and modding it in stages, but firstly addressing the mechanicals properly so that it drives exactly how you want it drive from the perspective of brakes, handling, engine power output, transmission/clutch/flywheel, then having done that and enjoyed the car for a year or five, do the backdate thing.
My guess is that having approached the car's ownership as described above, that ultimately most wouldn't go to the expense of backdating the car ...
No doubt there will some that like the backdated look, and if that's the case, perhaps it would be beneficial to spend some time in an example of the car you propose to backdate, to see if it actually a car that's good/nice to drive.
Which begs the question, how many of these cars drove nicely pre-backdate, only for the driving experience to be ruined by the fitment of wide tyres (and wider wheels) without the attendant suspension modifications.
I think it depends on the use case of the car. If you want to (semi-)daily it, then I guess a backdate of a 964 can make sense. But if it is purely a weekend car, I don't get why you would not just start with a period correct car and modify that - for starters it will already carry less weight, so lower power required etc.....

I can only speak from my experience, because the reality of driving an old 911 was a bit s
t to be honest.
Moderns for me!
The one thing I miss is abs. Everything my 3.2 does, it does well apart from split load/grip braking. Too easy to lock a wheel.
Moderns for me!
Other than that, when I drove a 997 gt3 on a track, it felt surprisingly similar...
Just at much higher speeds.
I like also this one for the money, also some nice parts and alcantara and red stitching etc, not bad at all fort he money, small things can be made better. under 75k euro...

This Rindt one has turned up again

Like with the Paul Stephens, these seats don't work in my opinion for this type of conversion.
A lot of space dedicated to seat heating which looks odd.
