E Gear Is Epic

Having come from 3 GTR's and PDK boxes I have to say I'm finding the move back to e gear is epic! Whilst we all know the double clutchers change gear up or down more smoothly and effectively like a switch I find that to be the problem. With the smootheness of the double clutchers it's as if there is only one gear in the box, it's more a change of revs than a change of gear! Faultless but sterile, quick but soulless!

That's what led me to the Lamborghini recently, the GT3 McLaren and 458 just didn't have the character for me, ultimately quicker no doubt but just not as envolving or soul provoking.

Price wise I could have got a GT3 458 650's for similar money to the Performante but the Lambo won me over.

Now to the e gear, OK so it's a 13 model so maybe better than earlier cars? Anyway it sits in auto without a care in the World and the changes are very smooth and when pressing in sport or corsa it's like having the envolvement of a manual box but with 98% of the efficiency of a PDK or double clutcher. Having taken someone out at the weekend the first comments were it's so smooth it feels like a plane more than a car.

The only one thing I ever get dependent on speed and the situation is a slight lift off oversteer sensation if you do need to grab en extra gear exiting a longer corner. This is as the car just takes that little bit of extra time to unload and then reload the power to the rear wheels causing a slight weight transfer from back to front to back again, that said the little wiggle keeps things alive and interesting!

Do we really need anymore for the road, e gear does it for me driving

I totally agree with you, the newer cars are faster in almost every respect but just so boring....

I still chuckle with eGear. Lift the foot slightly, flip and enjoy the baby kick. Or just be brutal and loosen your joints up with a donkey kick. Either way suits me perfectly. Passengers seem to approve also

The e-gear is good but I'd love to try a manual SL of my car. Not sure if it was an option for the later LP570 SL.

In addition to adding to driver involvement, the metal gear stick and gate would add to the interior looks. It would look better than the rounded area whet the buttons are and fit in well with the alcantara/carbon.

Anyone know if the made/sold the LP570-4 SL with a manual box?-

I dont know, but Given their are manual lp560s I would assume it is not too difficult to convert one to manual

Yeah I would have to concede - much as I love the Egear in the LP - and it really is mostly excellent - I would take a manual over it every time.

And I think a lot of people share that opinion - except most of the people who bought them from new.... why is that?

Love my early manual coupé. Second can be a bit baulky (But a least it'll go into second, even when cold. Unlike any manual Ferrari that I've ever driven!) but you just block shift up from first. Strongly suggested to Lambos head of vehicle dynamics at Imola last week that the Huracán would sell with a manual. It was very very clear (from his face even more than his words) that it was a non-starter.....

New and 2nd-hand owners are 2 distinct groups. The new owners may buy them as a statement or just because they want the very best - hence they will have all the very latest gadgets like eGear. The 2nd-hand owners are generally enthusiasts who want to indulge in the driving experience, hence manuals are preferred.

Why do you think that is?

I never understood why the single clutch auto boxes disappeared so quickly, they are lighter than DCTs, they have good efficiency and they are more engaging.
I never experienced egear but I loved the universally criticized transmissions of the E60 M5 and V8 Vantage Sportshift.
In some circumstances they need increased effort from the driver but in an enthusiast car I don't see where is the issue.

I'm considering a low mileage LP550-2 Gallardo with E-gear. I've never had a Lambo in the past so I just like to hear more opinions.

I'm relatively new to performance car ownership and do not have much experience yet. Recently, I just sold my 997.2 Turbo S in PDK and before that, a 997 Turbo in Tiptronic. In my experience with Porsche, the PDK was a lot better than the tip especially since turbo lag was almost negligible. While the 997's were excellent and powerful, like some of the comments I've read, I kinda found it lacking in soul and was bored after a while.

I currently have Ferrari Cali 30 with HS package and factory sport exhaust. While noticeably slower than the TTS (at least after the turbo spools up), I actually enjoy driving the Cali more as my weekends become a event I looked forward to (even if I worry a bit about reliability). I liked the linear power delivery and most especially the sound.

While for manual fun, I do have a BMW M4 in the garage as well which is also nice as the fat torque curve doesn't require me to shift too often. I do have a face-lifted W204 C63 as well and even if its not use a DCT, I actually have no issues and enjoy using it for daily driving.

Going back to E-gear, would you say that the Gallardo s at least suprior to the 997 Turbo Tiptronic? Or would you say even much better than AMG automatics? Because I really hated the Porsche Tiptronic and sold the 997 TT as soon as the 997 TTS opportunity came up despite the hefty cash out.

Thanks everyone!

I hated the tip box in the Porsche; awful. Its effectively an auto with buttons. I drove an LP EGEAR a couple of weeks ago and its excellent. Its a manual box that is automated. Really nice shift to it. Sounds incredible. I personally wouldnt buy a manual anymore given the choice. The only issue with the LP egear is that I think the paddles are a bit small!

E gear is single clutch and showing its age these days with DCT's ( slower and jerkier ). That said it has character and gets better the harder you drive it in manual mode.
Auto is a bit jerky and unpredictable especially around town.
Corsa gives you a real thump in the back and lets you know you have changed gear if thats your thing.

I would say its more involving than tiptronic but not necessarily better as an auto.

Very similar to the standard F1 F430 gearbox but not a patch on the 430 Scuderia superfast II F1 gearbox which I still rate as the best gearbox out there for that type of race car
