so, this is a touchy topic, but given we're in lockdown and even seeing cars is a pita, need some views. I like brighter colours in the McLaren range, but vaccinate wildly when considering what to go for.

Let's predicate this with the fact that, from what I can see, McLaren colours are pretty damn good regardless of which one you go for (though some of the current Renaults are lustrous too) - but let's go with this:

Putting it in the negative way (and without wanting to offend anyone):

  • is Volcano Orange somewhat, er, brown, in the UK weather?
  • is the standard McLaren Orange a little flat?
  • is the Curacao Blue a non-metallic (pretty sure it is) and so a bit flat too?
Do give me colours and reasons for choosing them (or not). I've decided (as much as any decision survives seeing them in reality) not to go for darker colours because (a) the darker accents get missed a bit more, and (b) anyone buying a McLaren isn't about keeping in the shadows..... (and whilst white is cool it is not for me- I think.....)

McLaren do have some very nice colours. Also you can choose anything from the MSO range if you pay extra. I had my 570GT in Cerulean Blue as a result (a £6k option).

I am not a fan of the greys (executive taxi) or blacks (don't show off the curves), but many love them. McLarens look surprisingly good in white though (I never liked white cars until I had a white loan McLaren).

Remember if you find the right car in the wrong (but still appealing to some) colour you can choose to wrap it. Or there is the fact that £10k on a colour change respray might be worth it if you're either painting it a std McLaren colour or planning to keep the car. This is typically a 100k+ car remember.

Volcano brown is a personal favourite. Love it when the orange comes through!

Volcano orange is just stunning; almost a pity that my 1st Mac was that colour as very hard to go from there for the next one, although I have decided on napier green.

Compared to VO, the other oranges do not flip, but likes of adores is still fantastic; the other oranges are less appealing but still very nice.

Curacao Blue in the flesh is also very stunning; like VO pictures cannot do it justice.

The last VO 650 that AB had for sale sold before he actually had a chance to post pics, and I sold mines privately in 2 weeks to the 1st person that enquired and that was in lockdown, so read into that what you may.

The volcano colours are amazing and makes an already 'stop in your tracks' product and turns it to volume 10.

Everyone is different but I can only offer my opinions and experience.

This was my McLaren Orange 12c..........it can be a little flat in dull UK weather and looks more pastel orange when next to another orange like Ventura orange for example.

My 600LT is Papaya Spark which I thought was McLaren Orange with added reflective sparkles but it's not, it's quite a bit darker than McLaren Orange......I like it but I won't have it again........I'll be going back to Napier Green, it's my favourite colour by a million miles..........my 570s attracts way more attention than the 600LT...

But, naturally colour is probably the most subject and divisive topics when discussing cars!!

I am with you there Sarnie.

Both of them oranges are nice, but compared to your napier 570 in the background it is apples and pears.

I'm not sure how it comes to resale regards napier, but I do not buy on that factor; I buy the colours I really like.

First Ferrari was Le Mans Blu with crema instead of resale red and black.

I know its not possible at the moment but it's so helpful going to a "meet" where there are loads of Macs and being able to compare colours side by side. My favourites are the Volcano colours - Orange, Red and Yellow, although I think the latter two were only available on 570s by special order.
However there's also the interior to consider and personally I don't like too much orange on the interior so if speccing from new would probably have gone for Red or Yellow with the same colour contrast stitching inside.
But for me, another huge difference is made by contrast on the exterior. Sarnies' two cars above both look fantastic and in my view that's in part down to having the contrasting dark roof (usually dark palladium). On a spider this has the added benefit of masking the joins in the roof panel. So if I ever do eventually get one, the dark palladium roof will be a must have. So the contrast between a bright paint colour, dark roof and dark splitter/diffuser/engine cover/side skirts is what really completes the look to my personal taste.

Whilst not seen many in the flesh, i definitely prefer the lighter or brighter colours.

What are the purples like in the flesh guys?

I didn't want Mclaren Orange this time around as my 12C was also this colour.

My first choice would have been Mantis Green but finding one with the Track Pack would have been a problem.

Even though I didn't want the same colour again I still walk away and look back admiring the colour. As already said its subjective, the only colours I would have refused would have been grey, black or volcano orange.

Light can play a big factor in McLaren Orange in pictures. Same car, same location but a different day. Both unedited iPhone pics.

Kind of against my usual onslaught of McLaren but sorry OP I don't agree with any of that.

IMO Mclarens colours are by and far the best on the market out of any of the supercar manufacturers, this must attribute to why it's like the secret circle trying to get hold of them as they don't want there colours on any Tom, Dick and Harry's car.

I normally have green cars but could not find a green track pack 570S.

Bought a ‘Lantana purple’ 570 which has grown on me a lot. Went down particularly well in Italy! 🇮🇹

Can look blue some days. Purple in the sun. And black in poor light.

You only really need to vaccinate twice I think and then, not wildly :-)

That's vermillion red

It looks red most of the time but when the sun hits it has a nice flake of orange through it
