I currently have a Maserati Granturismo and I am looking at scratching my V12 itch. I had assumed I would go down the Aston route, but a friend has suggested a 612. Any thoughts, things to be wary of, or recommendations?

Very capable car whose performance belies it's size, which is significant, though probably not that dissimilar to the Maserati. Interior is a little fragile; switches can break easily, heated seats etc. All are as expensive as you'd fear.
I think the experience may feel a little muted after the Maserati in terms of noise. You really need to be pushing on to hear the V12 in non-HGTC/S form. I think the later models addressed the sound.
I believe they're mechanically very sound. I had no issues and heard of none beyond the usual ball joint wear associated with this period Ferrari. Easily solved with the Hill Engineering ones.

I currently own the Maser GT and have had the 612 in the past. I think of the GT as an improved 612 with a V8. The GT boot is bigger, the switchgear is better and the car is more solidly put together.

The 612 has those fragile Ferrari ball joints and the air con condenser is very exposed to flying gravel. Servicing wise you have that big cambelt change every 3 years.

However, the 612 has a more nimble go-cart feel and the acceleration can pin you back in your seat and make your stomach tingle. It has more occasion and is a much rarer sight on the roads. The GT is more leisurely and more of a cruiser in comparison. It's a bit easier to look after, drive and own day to day.

Both cars will depreciate with added mileage so I wouldn't worry about that. The 612 is obviously a little thirstier.

The 612 is beautiful. Just on that basis, I'd get one if I had the space for another car.

Thought cambelts were 5 years with aux belts at 3?

Given the 612 is out of warranty anyway, you could get a sports exhaust for it
I would certainly pick it over the maser just because of the V12 if you can stomach the additional cost
I think they have aged really well - one of the cars I did not like at all when launched and think looks really good now - not Rosso though. Blue/black/grey/green/Grigio Ingrid or a really dark red - forgot the name, might have been Rosso Monza look best imo

Both cars sound great but a 612 with the sports exhaust is ... well, listen for yourself...
