Hi All I am a Newbie

I am finally looking to acquire a 575M (always has been my poster car). Liked the 599 and their current pricing but prefer somewhat analogue cars compared to today's digital products. As an idea i currently have an RS6 and 993 Carrera S which i have had for some 10-15 yrs each. So what i buy tends to be a keeper and well maintained.

I think this site is fantastic and has lots of great information and shared knowledge. This is what i would like to pick further.

I am looking at a 575 F1 2003 plate which has a retrofitted FHP kite., The mileage is pretty light given the age c.10k miles

My concern is the service history and would this put you off

2003 1k franchise dealer
2005 2k franchise
2006 4k franchise
2008 8k independent dealer (indie) +belts
2010 8.5k indie
then goes into storage with the indie, next service is
2015 10k indie +belts
2016 10k indie
2017 10.2k indie

brakes /disc tyres are all good, clutch is c70% worn. Clear HPI , cosmetically it is in good shape inside and out.

Would the above put you off? as they want 'good' money for it i.e if the 575m world in the UK is a 85k-130k mkt , this is certainly upper mid of the range.

Also any suggestions of hiring a good inspector?

thank you all

Definitely get an inspection.

Indie service is fine, but the issue is mileage. It really hasn’t done a lot in many many years. If you intend to drive it, rather than store it, then you will have to ‘de-bug’ it because any car that has basically sat idle for so long will store up issues - probably of the electrical kind... Tyres will need to go and various rubber bits will have perished. A good inspector will pick a lot of this up, but many issues won’t become apparent until it gets driven.

Mileage is too low if you intend to drive it

Inspection depends where the car is located

FHP is a bit unnecessary in UK so your overall premium of maybe forty grand is not optimum

Car is Swindon based.

I agree mileage is light. The sevice record seems a bit sporadic but looking at p'head classified this seems common.

It is more of a weekend car. I would like to put c1-2k a yr. But don't want to the points above develop a load of issues over the 1st year.

Clutch 70% worn at that low mileage is hmmm not right unless loads of launch take offs

I’ve had 2 Challenge Stradale, 1 Scuderia and 1 575HGTC, drove over 60,000km between the four of them...and have always averaged roughly 1-1.5% wear per 1,000km...and slightly but just slightly more on the ceramics (my 575 was equipped as a rare HGTC)

And unlike the above comment, buy the best even if it’s a low mileage car, who cares f you rack them up as long as you enjoy them.

Logical places for inspection would be Dick Lovett or Bob Houghton with Carrs in Exeter a regular recommendation for service depending on where you are based

I'd be looking at possible dash shrinkage & sticky switches on whichever car I looked at (there's a few out there)

Clutch wear is not completely accurate -- it could go tomorrow but it could have another 20-30 000 miles left

Looking at the car this weekend. i have read about dash shinkage and i believe it can be fixed - but i'll look out for that.

What is this 'sticky switches' ? - is this plastic degradation of the switch or switches mechanically not working and being sticky. Is there a fix or do you have to buy new switch gear?

Appreciate all your responses so far

Speak to Tim Walker at Walkersport about an inspection, he does travel.

I bought a 550 in 2014 (after he inspected it for me) and I wanted one with a bit of mileage as I knew I was going to use it and didn't want the potential low mileage issues - mine had 32k on it, it now has 48k.

The sticky switches are the coating on them - not the operation of them, they work fine just look a bit untidy. The coating is crap and degrades through use. You can strip the coating off them, and also get them re-coated - check out Stickynomore

Just rebuilding a 575 engine at the moment, still a modern all alloy motor for its age, we replaced all rubber components such as stem seals etc as they are all 14 years old now regardless of mileage. Main components were all good.

At next service I would recommend Hill engineering bearings for the cambelt adjusters and same for the lower steady bearings, far better product than the bits Ferrari now supply.

Also think about fitting new rubber engine mounts as they degrade with age.

I was also told the bearings for the oil pump shaft can also sometimes let go , so we replaced those as well, but that is a sump off job.

This engine was on the bench anyway so all simple to do on this example.

My understanding is the engine mounts are actually quite cheap with relatively little labour involved - a few hundred quid total

I have been using them for 5 years now and can highly recommend them. I am fortunate in that they are within walking distance of me, but they will collect your car and return it to you in their covered transporter for a nominal charge, wherever you are.

No more than a regular car other than Ferrari tax on certain components, its a pretty straight forward engine that any competent mechanic can work on, I am a former quantity surveyor! luckily I have the fallback of a father who last serviced the Merlins on the RAFs Lancaster and the VC10 fleet before he retired :-) he double checks my work just in case.

Engine mounts are a similar cost to any other car, gaskets are expensive as no aftermarket available, I did find that the stem seals are the same as those from a Golf 16v, cost us £25 for 48 of them from Elring, Ferrari wanted £250 for the exact same part from the same supplier.

Hill engineering bearings are very well made, so you pay a premium for such. £500 for those, as opposed to around £370 from Ferrari, but once purchased the Hill ones will never need replacing.

Pics to follow

Very happy with purchase. I am also just on gardening leave too so expecting to be using it a fair amt over the next few months if the weather is kind.

Now I need to source a bubble for the winter. Do any of you use these? Any recommendations as to brands.

Spec is grigio titanio, burgundy interior, retrofitted FHP, comes with all the accessories and luggage ( 6 pieces) . Leather parcel shelf.
Has tubi exhaust (original boxes and valves also included in sale). Other all original.

Only thing it hasn't got are the side shields but that is not a biggie to me.

Anything else specific to the spec u wanted to know?
