Daytona Coupes are usually £500k+, convertibles £1.5m+ and conversions normally £750k, so this looks somewhat of a bargain. Thoughts?

PS. Posting this as desperately hoping someone else here either points out it’s worthless or buys it, but most importantly stops me doing something stupid and buying it

It’s a conversion of some sort according to the description which explains the price, well sort of. Seems expensive to me.

From the description it’s a conversion using a donor car? A 365 Gt made to look like a Daytona?

Or am I confused?

My understanding is that it is one of these rebodied as a Daytona Spyder

What a shame.

Well done, PH, very helpful. It seemed weirdly cheap, missed the bit about 365 GT based. Still a bit tempted, just not at that price.

So around £110k all in with the auctioneers fees back in 2014. Then fixing anything that needed doing. I am sure a cheeky bid on this would be considered.

You’re not helping TP321, you’re really not...

I’ve always loved Daytona’s but never considered a replica as I hate the idea of someone saying “Wow, is that real?” and me having to shuffle my feet and say “Er, no, it’s really an old Jag”. Plus, no point if the experience of driving it is nothing like a Daytona.

But this one, I wonder... I’d be saying “It’s a genuine 1974 Ferrari 365 GT, but was originally the 2+2, and has been converted to a Daytona body”, which doesn’t seem so bad to me. Plus, it’s got the Columbo engine and I am guessing many of the real characteristics. So yes, it’s a “genuine fake” as TTmonkey put it so neatly...

It a long old explanation to give someone and I think you’d feel silly giving it to anyone who knew enough to ask about it.

Edit: that said, I just looked at the pictures again and it’s stunning to look at.

At least you could use it on a regular basis without worrying about mileage and value etc on a £1.5m original. 99.9% of people wouldn't notice the difference between this and a genuine, it is all Ferrari though just not all together as one model as it left the factory.
Be good to read about your experiences with it so please go and bid low and get it.

Hang on..it’s an original Ferrari..engine, gearbox..yes it’s not the real deal but the real deal is very rare and expensive. I actually think that this will always retain its value and who knows in the future when a Daytona Spyder is worth a couple of million what this would be worth.

Just read an article about it on FerrariChat from when it last came up. Pointed out that the boot and body line at the rear end points down and should be level. Doesn’t look right so I’m out...

Replica:

More likely they took the photos from angles that don’t highlight the issue.

I sold a blue 365 GT4 (400 shape ) to a guy who was going to turn it into a Daytona spyder , some years ago now when prices were around £8/10k.

Wealthy guy flew in on his private plane and i had to collect him from my local airport.

Had his own runway where he lived.

Shame really as it was a really nice example.

Not sure if it's this car or not as i can't remember the reg no and haven't got any photo's of it.

Can't be many that's been converted so good chance it is.

I’ve never come across another that was converted and given its RHD and not that common anyway, think there’s a reasonable chance it is yours. Extraordinary!

Just checked, and correcting an earlier post, the car it’s based on is indeed the 400-shape 1974 365 GT4 2+2 as pictured, not the 365 GTC 2+2 which stopped being made in 1970. And there were only 55 of these made in RHD...

Little bit more info here on how it was made, from FerrariChat discussion around time of its 2014 auction:

“The Ferrari 365 Daytona Spider by E G Autokraft is without question the most accurate replica of the marque. Dimensions are exact and allow genuine Ferrari parts to be used if required but most used Jaguar V12 engines and running gear, a very rare few used a genuine Ferrari as the doner vehicle.

These cars were built by E.G. Autokraft, PKA and Arrow which was the work of Emilio Garcia and Peter Jacobs. Emilio had been turning Ferrari 365 Berlinetta Daytona's into spiders for years so it was a logical step for him to engineer a replica. He turned to Peter Jacobs to make the bodies; Peter was the man who built the bodies for the RS200 Ford rally car and the GTD a very well made Ford GT 40 replica. The E.G bodies were Kevlar reinforced composite and could even be had in aluminium at extra cost. Uniquely they also built a copy of the Daytona Berlinetta's too and sold around seven in all. Ironically the rareity in the original Ferrari 365 Daytona was in that only seven right hand drive spiders were built, but the rareity in the Arrow replicas is there are only seven known coupes! The kits were around £20,000 plus the donor to be built and Emilio would build one for £25,000 for those who wished a built one. There is a thriving owners club with members around Europe and in the USA, which has helped many of them to complete and improve their cars.

This is one of the very rare Daytona Spiders by E G Autokraft which is based and is registered on a 1974 Ferrari 365 2+2 Coupé, keeping the original matching chassis and engine numbers with a manual gearbox. Looking at the car it is an exact copy using the wheels, lights and instruments (other than the amp meter) from the donor Ferrari 365. Believed to have been built in the 1980's this Daytona Spider is in excellent condition throughout having only completed a very limited mileage since being built as a Daytona recreation, finished in Sera blue with light blue leather interior this ferrari is supplied with a V5C registration document and a MoT test certificate which expires in November 2015. With the original 1970's Ferrari Daytona Spider having a value in the millions of Dollars, this Daytona Spider recreation looks, sounds and drives the same at a fraction of the cost, a real head turner that people will think it is a real one! For sale by auction on Saturday 29 November 2014 with Historics at Brooklands, Brooklands Motor Racing Circuit, Weybridge, Surrey”
