I'm guessing material is just too thin at point where it failed. Real fix is to make same dimensions part from stronger material.
I couldn't agree more. We are probably seeing here one of the limits of tracking such a heavy car.The part does not seem very complicated and should not be too difficult to machine from billet steel.
There are two part numbers for the LSD, is it the earlier or the later one in your car?

I really am so happy that Florian is going rebuild to his excellent standards. He's also going to copy the parts incase anyone else requires this repair and upgrade without paying the expensive donkey tax

His email to me below:
Hi Robert,
good news:
i was able to get my hands on some like-new (they ran only a few hours on a testing facility) original ferrari lsd core parts that fit your core.
it seems what i got is a later, improved version if you look at the four holes around the crack on your cover.
the later version has no more big round holes but smaller oval ones. i guess to have more material left at the area where yours did fail.
furthermore the original axle bevel gears show some wear on the outer side facing the washer. the ones i have here look better.
i’d suggest to replace them as well.
the two washers should also be replaced: one is broken, the other one is quite flattened.
plus the replacement of the clutches itself of course. here i would suggest to switch the order of the clutches so that the lockup goes up to ~45% on power and 30% on coast. before it was ~25/15%, which is definitely on the lower side if you want to drive a bit spirited.
enclosed are some pics

Interesting the sneaky b
ds at Ferrari changed the holes to oval to stop the failing parts in the LSD !
I wonder how early (or late) in the development of the car did they realise it was a problem but the design was already fixed. Or did customers 'test' it and revision came in the next product cycle?
ds at Ferrari changed the holes to oval to stop the failing parts in the LSD !Just finalising a few details for the LSD. Lee is measuring up and confirming the LSD orientation.

This picture is of the LSD still in the gearbox

Florian has been so detailed in ensuring the LSD is built correctly and adapted to what I want to get out it performance wise.
He's got loads more content on Instagram
https://www.instagram.com/limitedslip.de/
He also has all kinds of Ferrari LSD cores and parts like 275, 348, 365, 512, dino and even f40 in stock.

Has finished the LSD

He also provided a data sheet along with running and maintenance recommendations.

I asked him if I could take the car drifting and his reply reminded me of a couple previous comments

Can I drift it.
Yes I can

Disagree - the Maserati GranTursimo GT4 used pretty much the same LSD with full on slicks. The cassette is subject to loads your LSD can only dream of and yet, Maserati Corse don t life the LSD nor there is a technical bulletin on it. I would call your problem a case of bad luck.

Wonder what causes this failure?
If there aren't signs of overheating or high wear on bearings its likely just weak material used to make that individual part. Testarossa etc. problem is caused by welding parts together. Failure on weld will result gearbox casing to ultimately crack unless its caught on time. Can I drift it.
Yes I can

Happy that Seb had vindicated Erkka - 928GTS and myself - a fellow 928GTS owner amongst other sheds - in our assessment of your failure mode.
Even happier that your problem has been fixed.
60Nm preload is nice and tight, and should give you a very, very progressive LSD, which is a must on a 600+ (bhp & Nm) car...
Btw, you never said why Dave is having new pistons made for you? Are the ring lands on the OEM ones knackered?
I have used him in the past and he has been nothing but a pleasure to work with. Very reasonably priced too, which isn't normally associated with the word "Motorsport" or "Performance"...

Apologies for slight thread hijack, I m picking my 599 up in the next few weeks and was wondering if my Noco battery charger/conditioner will work ok.
Can t find much online so any pointers much appreciated.
Cheers.
Congratulations! Have lots of fun Can t find much online so any pointers much appreciated.

Do you have pictures? What type of battery is in your 599? Recommended is an AGM battery.
Do you have the Ferrari adapter so you can plug straight in rather than connect to the terminals?
This adapter also disables the starter and throws a warning light on the dash to prevent you accidentally driving off still connected to the wall socket.
Ferrari trickle charger is rebranded ctek so your noco should be fine with AGM.
This is the adapter you will need depending on the quick connect on your noco

I'd recommend getting the alternator and battery checked for performance / degradation
Tips before leaving the dealer: have a look in the intake to check for oil on the MAF and well as checking the oil level as per the revised oil check procedure - no more than half way between min / max for winter and 10 mm above min for summer / drives where the smile is a little nervous, hands tremble just a bit and every siren is a check to see if they're coming for you and your escape route
I'm a little jealous

Thanks Hughsie and cake eater much appreciated!
All noted, it s just got a clean bill of health from Maranello Egham and has FFSH, serviced there from new.

I ll check the Norco later! Edited to add ordered the adapter.

Main reason for using Dave is cost. The OEM pistons are in good shape and could be used again. Obviously new rings are required but the cost of Ferrari rings were equivalent to the cost of a set of Carrillo pistons and rings.Even happier that your problem has been fixed.

So the man maths started. And obviously the spec creep. And now the CP piston and ring set is a little more expensive than just the rings from Ferrari.
To tell you the truth I've gone a little overboard. Well maybe more than a little overboard

And Dave is just super. Answered all my stupid questions, freely gave advice, really helpful.

Super choice and congratulations again, wishing you many happy miles!
Yes it’s a factory HGTE with 8,000 miles, I’ve been looking online for the last 6 months and wanted FFSH this one popped up and I pounced.
It’s a a dream car for me, Schumacher era and a V12.
I have it booked in for Ferrari premium next year to keep on top of it and am thoroughly enjoying reading up on them. Didn’t realise how advanced they were and won EVO car of the year 2006!
Thanks again and I’ll post more pics when I get it.

8000 miles! I hope you're going to double that number quickly. It s a a dream car for me, Schumacher era and a V12.

I was also surprised when I read the that the 599 won EVO car of the year in 2006. I do wonder if Ferrari had done something 'special' to get it to handle?

Congratulations on your purchase, looks stunning. I collected my HGTE a few weeks ago from Ferrari Edinburgh and it is a joyous (and slightly scary) machine. Confidence vastly improved now that I've fitted Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres around. It s a a dream car for me, Schumacher era and a V12.

Car was supplied with NoCo battery charger and had a standard Lead Acid battery. No problems with starting but I upgraded to a Varta AGM battery for peace of mind. Charge lead adaptor also supplied but the charging port was u/s. Cable OK but would not charge battery, ended up hardwiring CTEK adapter to battery with the M8 eyelets supplied with new CTEK MXS5.0 charger.
