Every day tips for living with a 599
Discussion
I just wanted to say that I've smashed through this entire thread in the last 48 hours and it's absolutely jaw-dropping.
Having just completed my first ever year of 'super' car ownership (Audi R8 V10+) I initially couldn't decide if this thread is terrifying or reassuring but it certainly is inspirational. If a 599 can stand up to what you put it through on an annual basis then there's hope for us all.
Can't wait to see what happens when it's all back together - very best of luck and thanks for documenting in such brilliant detail.

Guessing that once your v12 is reassembled, you ll need to run it in as if it were new?
Also guessing you ve decided this car is a keeper?
In which case, I d urge you to heed this lube guru s oil-change advice, all of which is science- / fact-based, for engine break-in:

I will be treating exactly as new for both engine and gearbox. Oil change planned after 500 miles

I think it's scary for me, I also think I've been lucky in a way. I always wanted to share the good and the bad. To be honest I never expected her to cost so much but I've also been glad to have found the problems before they became really serious. Engine I've gone overboard but not enough as I couldn't afford to do everything I wanted.
I'm so looking forward to driving

Brother Cake is indeed the keeper of the flame for those of us who have wandered and strayed from the one true path of 12 ownership.
I am currently triggering a hybrid Rangie purchase, but I shall return to the fold in time Brother, you have my word.
I'm looking forward to that moment and hoping we can share a few stories in person one day I am currently triggering a hybrid Rangie purchase, but I shall return to the fold in time Brother, you have my word.

I perversely like that the 599 isn't so popular, it slips under the radar when needed. It's also challenging on the limit which is both scary and rewarding. The F1 gearbox is nowhere near as good as the DCT but also much better than people will tell you (when the clutch is good and properly set up).
R8 V10 is awesome and

Drives his harder than mine (and far better than I can) and has incurred similar costs of engine, gearbox, suspension etc.
Cheers Cake - don’t worry, Mr Pinder’s exploits are legend in the R8 community! The man takes a punch to the wallet in almost as good humour as you do
I’ll take the FF / F12 comments under advisement - I’ve got a good few years of saving to do before it becomes a possibility but I’ll be sure to stash some extra away for ‘eventualities’

FF and F12 will still come under the extended warranty program

Two schools of thought, the extended warranty (power 16) is so expensive and has so many exclusions that you're better pocketing the money each year and saving for the inevitable rainy day.
Mine came with extended warranty and it paid for itself when the power steering pump failed, so it worked out for me.
My issue has been more with main dealers than with the car. The mechanics at dealerships aren't trained on this engine / car. I've had two different dealers who overfilled the oil and caused damage. One was in complete denial and the other was fabulous to deal with (eventually). European dealers seem to know the car better, or at least that's my impression.
A good F12 is twice the cost of a good 599 and I'd recommend the F12 over the 599. But I still don't think you can beat a 599.
Either way, here's one for the journey

A 599 is a bus compared to an F12. That s the reality.
The F12 is also basically dbl a 599 in terms of money. Is it dbl the car - different question.
The trouble with buying an F12 is there is no point selling it because you never going to buy anything better at what it does.
No denying the truth of this, and I think a lot of people would answer yes to double the car. The F12 is also basically dbl a 599 in terms of money. Is it dbl the car - different question.

When I started to think of getting something special, a Maserati Grandturismo man mathed into a 599. An F12 (with the right spec) was just way out of my budget. I could have gone finance, I just didn't want that much debt. And then there would still be maintenance on top and the inevitable upgrades

Having said that, over 4 years, I've spent the difference in maintaining and upgrading the 599.

I'm hoping this investment will mature into years of trouble free motoring

No guarantee that doesn't happen with the F12, while one person I know has had one relatively hassle free, the other had a lot of very expensive issues in 12 months and got rid.
Let's face it, all Donkeys can cost a lot of money!
