One of my favourite threads is the FF owner who had to put new mounting bolts in his CCM discs and I completely nerded out on single use 8 nm bolts
Mate did that in his Maserati, but with Titanium ones they had made !
Trying to do a group buy for the 599

If anybody is *really* interested (hint: you won t be, it s really dull), given that we are in the most worshipful brotherhood of 12 (ok 928 isn t, but a GTS is one of my cool cars, so he gets a pass), I could tell you how the old fashioned ICE blue printing techniques are still done in the battery world. It s actually v v closely aligned!
That would be interesting to nerd out on.P.S. I think you are wrong about Mr 928GTS - he worships at both churches, being the proud owner of a 550 alongside a great 928 GTS 5-spd. It is me who is more of a sinner, since I am more partial to the older sibling from
Bologna/Modena and another 928 GTS 5-spd
Sorry

So what most ppl call batteries are actually just cells, usually/traditionally 18650s arranged in s-p configurations(cells connected in series and parallel). You then either got passive or active - which are batteries either without it with a BMS…Battery Management System.
A BMS basically evens and smoothes out your cells - because all identical cells are not identical…see where I’m going with this? It’s basically the cheap n simple way of doing stuff. Yes, all the auto world telling you about their funky battery management stuff and energy flows is mostly just them disguising start from the cheap ass way of doing things.
The passive world is much more intensive and bespoke. Every cell in your procured batch is effectively inspected and then “binned”. Say you buy 10,000 cells, you might then create 10 bins, so your nominal all equal cells actually then get put into 10 different groups of way more tighter tolerances according to their actual performance. Then when you come to build your batteries, each battery is only built from cells from a particular bin - that way you ensure you don’t need a BMS, your battery is almost perfectly balanced, reliable, stable and performing optimally. It doesn’t matter then whether you are building a small 4s1p or a big dbl deck f
ker containing a few hundred cells. Oh and generally lasts for 20+ yrs in the harshest environments that humans engineer for without anybody touching them ever again delivering peak performance from cradle to grave. And no, I’m never saying any of that outside of this little sub forum on here that almost nobody reads except us because I really really can’t be arsed engaging with the EV arguments on PH.
And tbf, I did warn you it was really dull !

From batteries to shiny mechanical stuff.
My gearbox and crank have been sent to Mike at the gear lab https://www.gear-lab.co.uk/ for isotropic super finishing.

Before

After

The selector forks and crank are still to be done.
The selector forks are cast and as a result cannot go in to a vibratory machine and will been hand ceramic blasted.
The gears have also gone through an ultrasonic cleaning to ensure that the oil galleries are clear after the ISF process. Even so, I have asked Lee to physically run a pipe cleaner through them as per the recommendation of David Moore Engineering.

I'm not proud at all as so far have managed to get only this far into 550 and would like to keep it that way:928:s on other hand:
Those gearbox pieces are full on art. Shame they will be invisible again.

Oh wow!! Look at that! Beautiful. Always a little frustrating when there's a pile of bits and not much is going together.928:s on other hand:

How come so many cranks? Or am I missing something?
