One of my favourite threads is the FF owner who had to put new mounting bolts in his CCM discs and I completely nerded out on single use 8 nm bolts
Mate did that in his Maserati, but with Titanium ones they had made !
Trying to do a group buy for the 599

If anybody is *really* interested (hint: you won t be, it s really dull), given that we are in the most worshipful brotherhood of 12 (ok 928 isn t, but a GTS is one of my cool cars, so he gets a pass), I could tell you how the old fashioned ICE blue printing techniques are still done in the battery world. It s actually v v closely aligned!
That would be interesting to nerd out on.P.S. I think you are wrong about Mr 928GTS - he worships at both churches, being the proud owner of a 550 alongside a great 928 GTS 5-spd. It is me who is more of a sinner, since I am more partial to the older sibling from
Bologna/Modena and another 928 GTS 5-spd
Sorry

So what most ppl call batteries are actually just cells, usually/traditionally 18650s arranged in s-p configurations(cells connected in series and parallel). You then either got passive or active - which are batteries either without it with a BMS…Battery Management System.
A BMS basically evens and smoothes out your cells - because all identical cells are not identical…see where I’m going with this? It’s basically the cheap n simple way of doing stuff. Yes, all the auto world telling you about their funky battery management stuff and energy flows is mostly just them disguising start from the cheap ass way of doing things.
The passive world is much more intensive and bespoke. Every cell in your procured batch is effectively inspected and then “binned”. Say you buy 10,000 cells, you might then create 10 bins, so your nominal all equal cells actually then get put into 10 different groups of way more tighter tolerances according to their actual performance. Then when you come to build your batteries, each battery is only built from cells from a particular bin - that way you ensure you don’t need a BMS, your battery is almost perfectly balanced, reliable, stable and performing optimally. It doesn’t matter then whether you are building a small 4s1p or a big dbl deck f
ker containing a few hundred cells. Oh and generally lasts for 20+ yrs in the harshest environments that humans engineer for without anybody touching them ever again delivering peak performance from cradle to grave. And no, I’m never saying any of that outside of this little sub forum on here that almost nobody reads except us because I really really can’t be arsed engaging with the EV arguments on PH.
And tbf, I did warn you it was really dull !

From batteries to shiny mechanical stuff.
My gearbox and crank have been sent to Mike at the gear lab https://www.gear-lab.co.uk/ for isotropic super finishing.
https://www.gear-lab.co.uk/super-finishing/
Before

After

The selector forks and crank are still to be done.
The selector forks are cast and as a result cannot go in to a vibratory machine and will been hand ceramic blasted.
The gears have also gone through an ultrasonic cleaning to ensure that the oil galleries are clear after the ISF process. Even so, I have asked Lee to physically run a pipe cleaner through them as per the recommendation of David Moore Engineering.

I'm not proud at all as so far have managed to get only this far into 550 and would like to keep it that way:928:s on other hand:
Those gearbox pieces are full on art. Shame they will be invisible again.

Oh wow!! Look at that! Beautiful. Always a little frustrating when there's a pile of bits and not much is going together.928:s on other hand:

How come so many cranks? Or am I missing something?

With Lewis joining Ferrari next year, I'm guessing there will be much more of a Ferrari following in the UK and some events for owners too? Is there any sign of this and maybe would Lewis presence influence the prices of the cars too? Assuming it doesn't go badly that is! I'm already thinking I need a red Lewis cap for Sundays
After all this time, a win for Lewis Hamilton with Ferrari https://youtu.be/Ey8j_BlLvFM?si=d-B4eb1vDnGuhIbb
I hope his season continues this way.

Especially after Ferrari being soundly beaten at Le Mans.

A comeback story is always inspirational.
A big move to go to Ferrari, then all the talk of retirement long before contract end.
And then today

No doubt some luck with the virtual safety car but you had to be in the right place to take advantage and he was.
Going his own way with set up, ditching the simulator, all speaks of someone gaining in self belief and confidence.

I'm also happy for Toyota, a car company that has undergone a revolution. From C-HR to GR, I'd be happy to be seen in one of their cars. Especially after Ferrari being soundly beaten at Le Mans.
Even the Prius

However I'm maintaining my environmental responsibility. No new car and saving the world by saving my old one.

I’ve maintained for the last few yrs that the two best car companies, especially in terms of dealing with - are Ferrari and Toyota. Until the Hilux went back in Feb we were running 2 of them, the truck and a Yaris and both brilliant vehicles from a brilliant company that looks after its customers properly. I also have similarly glowing comments about dealing with Ferrari, I always find they know how to look after their customers and provide good service and ownership experience. To say I have the opposite experiences with the likes of Porsche and Merc is an understatement. Indeed this weekend we have bought an XC60 from Volvo - it has been one of the most protracted, convoluted and bloody annoying processes I’ve ever been through.
It wasn’t just Hamilton or Ferrari winning yesterday though, it was the manner. Suddenly he had both the opportunity and the means and Hammer Time was back. Proper, old skool Hammer Time and for some reason the Mercs had no answer! Going to be an interesting summer.

My parents always bought Toyotas, my Dad even had the original AE86 corolla. Growing up I was only ever chauffeur'd around in a Toyota. Much later in life Dad changed to an E class, Mercedes E63s was his dream car. Unfortunately children meant he had an E320It wasn t just Hamilton or Ferrari winning yesterday though, it was the manner. Suddenly he had both the opportunity and the means and Hammer Time was back. I myself have had a CLA45 shooting brake that I loved and was treated really well by the dealership.
Ferrari have been generally great but Manchester I try to avoid. GreyPaul in Nottingham have been superbe, especially when it came to rectifying a mistake at service. Maranelllo service in Egham were similarly good. I also have to say the same of the Ferrari dealers in Europe that I've visited, all excellent service.
As for Volvo, my mum wanted an XC40 and now refuses to even consider any Volvo after her single experience with the dealer.
My friend used to be the manager of a Lexus dealership and I love to tell this story. My friend had a client, school teacher (not that that makes any difference) who's dream car was a Lexus. She bought an IS200 and first winter snow struggled to drive the car. She called my friend to complain. His response. 'You're right, these cars can be quite difficult to drive in the snow. Every time there's a snow day, call me and I'll arrange someone to drive you to and from school.' No attempt to up sell, no condescending about her driving skills, just belief in the highest level of service. When it came to trade in her IS, she bought another Lexus.
My ex-wife had a boxster, we were in the dealership when a couple came in to say that the key for the car they had just bought didn't work. The response from the service was a surprise to me. They told them that you can just use the key if the fob doesn't work and to go and change the battery themselves as the dealership would charge a fortune to change the battery. I was so surprised at the attitude. This couple had spent how much on a car and they were going to charge for a coin battery, nevermind telling them to do it themselves! Surely, out of courtesy you change the battery for free!? Complete antithesis of Lexus.
Welcome to Porsche … as they say.
I loathe dealing with Merc dealerships, always painful, but we like their products. Run a bunch of SLKs, Es and MLs.
We can never give our Toyota/Lexus dealer enough praise, they are always superb and we should probably have gone with the Lexus and not the Volvo, but hey ho, is what it is and my wife is happy with her bday pressie.
I thought the Kubota was an expensive bribe to buy the F12, I figure the XC60 bribe frees up an Enzo tbh!!!!
