AC Compressor advice

My ac compressor has packed up and needs repairing or replacing.

My car is a 1995 456 manual. I understand that it shares a compressor with the 550, 575 & 612.

Does anyone know the most sensible way of fixing this?
Should I replace or repair?
Does anyone have any suggestions for either option please?

I'm guessing that the car cannot be driven while the compressor is out as it shares a belt with the alternator?

About 10 years ago, the compressor on my 348 failed. I contacted a local air con specialist (https://autoairconditioningltd.co.uk) - they found the OEM version (i.e non Ferrari tax version) and replaced it.
It wasn't expensive - think it cost me something like £500 in total.
