My perfect Ferrari?

Saw this article and fell in love!

Love the shape of the 308 but when I finally drove one it seemed a bit tame. This seems about perfect. Retains the shape, loses weight and adds some serious thrust. I have a groups of friends in the UK who do road trips to Wales and once a year to the Alps - mainly in early 911s. Think this would be a magnificent alternative (with earplugs).

I wonder how much it would cost to make something similar.

Very nice. I don't doubt that must be one of the quickest and most desirable 308s. I would be surprised if it truly made 450 bhp, though.

Owned, developed, built and driven (quickly) by Tony Worswick.
I used to watch him rallying it in the 80’s, it was a quick car, and he was a quick driver.

I spoke to him whilst looking at the car at the Cholmondley Pageant of Power a couple of years ago, a more down to earth bloke you could not meet.

Whilst the power output is barely believable, a read of this article :

would indicate the power unit was originally developed with Formula 3000 use in mind, on that basis, 430-450 wouldn’t be a million miles away from what was required to be competitive.

I’m sure Tony would entertain building an engine/car for you if you waved a big enough wad of cash at him, just be aware genuine Michelotto dog ‘boxes don’t come cheap ...

The Group B spec 3.0 V6 6R4 engines made 410hp, so the V8 flat plane crank Ferrari engine should be able to better it, if only by 20-30hp.

I suspect, as with most race/rally cars, the reality of driving them outside of their natural environments (race circuits or rally stages), is a lot different to the idea of it, because usually, they are just too compromised for any other use.

Where is why you would keep a standard 308 in addition. Make a nice pair, side by side in my garage..

A modern purpose built rally car - I’m sure you are right but for old cars that were converted from production road cars I think that with a few modifications they can be made to work. Of course I’m not talking about using them as daily drivers. But as weekend cars probably no more extreme than a Caterham. I had a fairly extreme hot rod early 911 that I generally drove with earplugs but I changed the exhaust, added back a little bit of sound deafening material and swapped the tyres to more normal road tyres and it became much more liveable (having said that I managed a road trip up to Scotland from London in its earlier state without a problem).

I think my ideal 308 would be to strip out it to lose the weight with some extra power and better suspension but not going to the extreme of making it a copy of the rally car. I’m sure that with a weight of one tonne then 280-300 bhp would more than enough (for reference my 911 had about 215 for just under a tonne and that was the most fun car to drive I’ve owned).

Thanks browngt3, not just me then, was only thinking the same when looking though the" Countach "and" My old Lambo photo's from the 90' s " on how uplifting they are after all these boring doom and gloom threads, must be 4 or 5 at the moment, in fact (Big Al) who i think is one of the mods took a thread down after only one evening as it was the same old thing in a different guise, did post on a couple of these threads ,just to say that it was getting a little boring but i was lmmediately gunned down by the usual pompous culprits , Love this thread on this 308 GTB, had a track day one myself for a number of years and although i love my f430 i still hanker after another 308 ,more involving somehow and a greater chance of keeping my license,

Spent way too much time yesterday looking at rally videos of 308s and thinking about doing stuff like the Tour Auto.... too bad I don’t have money / uncertain income, otherwise I’d probably be on the phone after the weekend. I kept looking at 911 ST, RS reps in the past and was always a little worried about my driving skills/experience vs a short wheelbase rear-engined car. I suspect a 308 would suit me better.

As a pure weekend A to A car, I think a rally rep is probably ok. I suspect it is not what you want to use for a 200km plus Highway slog on a regular basis

I completely agree with these sentiments, the old Lambo photo thread is one of the best on here to my mind.
On the subject of the power of this engine, having read the second article I can see it could be well over 300bhp, given the extent of the modifications.

The Pioneer livery suggests a replica of one of Pierre Bardinon's cars, I'm sure I saw a similar car as part of the Mas Du Clos collection.
