You're confusing CarGurus (new owner) with Haymarket (previous owner). Haymarket did essentially pull all engineering resource off PH and there was probably at least a year where we had next to no support at all.

CarGurus are investing heavily in PistonHeads and we probably have the biggest engineering team we've ever had. Naturally as the classifieds is our core source of revenue, that's still getting the majority of engineering resource but the forums now have more resource than they've probably had in at least five years, if not more.
So is a forum upgrade on the agenda?
haha... good one.

Would be great to make a custom feed - I typically look at the gassing station as a category which encompasses most but not all of the sub forums I like.

Would be cool to add a few more.
This is possible now - you need to select the forums you want to favourite under My Preferences, and then in What's New you can toggle just your favourite forums or all.

While it won't have been noticed on the front end, there has been a lot of effort post-acquisition to stabilise the site and improve the performance of the forums and the site as a whole. There are ongoing technical improvements being made to the site with a gradual migration to a modern web stack.

Naturally as the classifieds drives most of PHs revenue, that's where the highest proportion of resource goes but the forums are here to stay and haven't been forgotten about. Our time will come!

We are just going to have to agree to differ.
After all what would someone who has a background in software design and teaching possibly know?
The forum couldn't be easier to navigate. Very simple groupings of sub-forums.

It seems we are now hosted on AWS. Was that a recent thing? I am not sure I noticed anything when the change happened but I think that is a sign of success.

Believe it or not, we were actually an early adopter with AWS and have been on it for a long time.

The key changes in the past year are that we've been updating our infrastructure for the first time in about a decade, using the latest servers and hardware to make the site more stable and to prevent the outages that we've experienced in the past.

The fact that no one noticed anything can only be good news biggrin

The only reason I know is because on one occasion logging in took just a moment longer than usual and up pooped the AWS blue arrows you get when AWS is thinking. It was gone in a flash but I had to confirm my suspicion so checked the hosting.

Yes. The navigation is very clunky. It's a very old forum program though. I'm a rare visitor. Probably gets easier with use.

How about like Facebook, where it puts the same threads at the top visit after visit, because its algorithm has decided they are what you want to read most?
You must use a different facebook to me. I can never go back and find something I saw 5 mins earlier!

Half way through reading a post, doorbell rings, sign for a parcel, unlock phone, refeashes, never to be seen again!

I'm not going to say the structure is fundamentally bad - but it is a result of the forum's history, and, as a result needs a serious revamp.
For me the other serious flaw is the seach facility, which is no more useful than just using google search from outside pistonheads.

I see the OP has got lost again. To be fair to him this post did start out in BMW before being moved and now it’s in website feedback so he is probably looking in the wrong place.

Out of all the forums I go on, piston heads is one of the cleaner forums. It used to have very few sub forums so everything was in one place. If you want to travel back in time go to the archive at the bottom of the forum list.

OP simple rules to follow. Web site feedback should go in the “Web site feedback” forum. BMW related topics should go In the BMW forum.

The “lounge” is for general topics and “News, Politics and economics” is for extreme view points. “Speed plod and the law” is for when you have fked up but want people to tell you what you want to hear and not actual law. “Super cars general” is for when you think a Lamborghini Urus is discreet. “Holidays and travel” is now mostly historical reference information due to COVID. “Pedal powered” is a documentation of Johnny’s tattoos from multiple angles and nothing to do with actual photographs of today’s rides.

The most important rule is, avoid the “Watches” forum. Step into this world and then wake up 10 years later and you have a wolf watch box with multiple pieces that don’t get wrist time due to not being part of the rotation and you are falling behind on mortgage payments.
clap Brilliant - I'd missed this first time round wink
