Wonder if that would be "forum based on UK must request" or "forum anywhere must request from UK users"?
The government would say it is the latter.
The aim is a global system of surveillance so I suspect VPNs etc will only be a workaround for so long.

Expect to see a lot of international sites block-banning UK IP ranges so they don't have to comply.

We've already seen this when the GDPR came in - many regional US news sites simply don't allow people from the UK access.

But they’re already done that with the 5g chips in the vaccine haven’t they?

I thought the current system was in-house and custom.

Possibly they are integrating a third party authentication system for improved security, or maybe they ve written a new one in house.

Login security is not something to get wrong these days, and if the current one is very old it may flag up as a risk on a security audit.

Scott
This is accurate.

It depends on what changes are implemented and whether or not they are communicated in advance by PH.

If changes are rolled-out overnight with no prior notification, and we have to link our accounts with verifiable 'IRL' identity in some way (e.g. credit card verification or photo ID uploads or biometric facial recognition data harvesting via a third party provider, a la Online Safety Act changes to 'adult sites') regardless of a double-decade posting history clearly indicating I am not 14, I will very likely just abandon my account.

If we are given advanced notification of such requirements, I would like to write a 'final post' to offer thanks to PH for giving us a space (for free) to have some excellent conversations.

If you want to celebrate others being excluded from public life and having their ability to speak freely removed for not being compliant with central government diktat, a consideration of what such othering has led to in the past may be beneficial.

In fairness, while I do agree with all of that, PH haven’t said they plan to do this.

PH can do whatever they like as far as I care.

I appreciate the free to use forums, an aspect many seem to forget.

Quick official note. This is simply a back-end upgrade to replace an old login system. Expected benefits are fewer random logouts, support for extra login providers, native integration with the PH app, and, most importantly, Ben will be happy not to have to change anyone’s email address by hamster ever again.

We will not implement mandatory identity verification for general forum reading unless compelled by law. If that ever happens we will give notice, lay out your options, and choose privacy sensible solutions. No midnight passport patrols, honest.

On that note, still waiting for mine to be updated.

Any update on the username question Matt? Will a username change be possible in the future-even if only by request?

In some situations, maybe. But username roulette isn’t something we’ll be supporting. It's a GDPR minefield.

Interesting, in what way? Things like SARs being hard to execute?
