The reason you spent £6K:

£2K approx for a "clutch kit" (3 piece assembly)
£1500-1700 for release bearing
£2.5K in labour

the above are average figures.

I pay (DIY);


£850 for a full face kevlar clutch from Maddog engineering (plus reface & balance the pressure plate and flywheel)
£500 for the Gallardo/R8 (and LP670) updated release bearing
£1200 (from memory) for the LP670 Bellhousing to allow the sue of the above release bearing

I took the opportunity to change oil & coolant rather than "collecting and re-using it" as service shops do.

These cars are not expensive to run if you do it yourself; my next clutch change will just be another £850 or so plus fluids, so I feel fine using my e-gear in a spirited manner :-) (I get on with these boxes so well I recently bought a quattroporte F1 as these are essentially the same magnetti marelli parts, regardless Ferrari/maserati/lambo- eg the clutch disc on an e-gear murcielago is the same as a 599 F1 Ferrari)

I also upgraded the front brakes on mine to the 8 pot Gallardo brakes- but they are actually Audi items..... even have the Audi rings cast on the calliper! I got these of e-bay, repainted them and fitted new seals and pistons (quite cheap to do).

Number plate lights are of an series one Audi TT... theres also a lot of R8/gallardo cross over, like the brake master cylinder/brake booster assembly... I could go on. I got most parts from auto-recyclers in LA & Germany and some new parts from eurospares, and some from just regular Audi dealers....
I really envy you mate..i just don't have the gumption nor the mechanical know how to tackle a job like that. I had the bigger brake upgrade done too using 6 pot calipers as couldn't find the adaptors for the 8 pot calipers. Had the lp570 master cylinder put in as well. That wasn't wallet friendly either.

Nothing to envy really.. just a misspent youth. Cars are a hobby, and honestly I just found many workshops take the Pi$$ and decided to do it myself. I also found working on cars a therapeutic- focusing on simple tasks means I don't think of work... Lambo/Maserati/Ferrari are seriously not any harder to work on than Jap & German cars. or Alfa's for that matter.

If you want a set of adaptors for the gallardo/lp640 brakes- I can supply them.

I also got the Gallardo master cylinder, not fitted it yet, but probably will later in the summer.

God I love those of you doing the work on your own cars. And I hate you as well.

It's horses for courses this. I work hard to afford my toys. That affords me close to zero time to do anything to them apart from drive them.

I have reasonable mechanical sympathy and if you can wield a spanner and have some skills, a lot of time and some good support / manuals, in my experience you can take on anything. Most things I do take on I'm fairly confident I do better than anyone else (or at least I can only blame myself).

But time... I don't have it. 3 kids with gaping maws, a pretty serious all-consuming job, a house that is in a constant state of entropy, and some time to spend with a recalcitrant wife.

So whilst I'd love to haul the engine out the Murci and 'get to know it', I can't. Such is life.

I love you for what you do. I hate you for having the time to do it!

So, the logic is thus:- work hard, save to buy toy, buy toy, enjoy toy, break toy, pay man to fix toy quickly, work hard to pay man. Die young.

I owned the white LP640 that the supercar clinic have up for 220k, it was good fun and what a fantastic engine but that’s where it ends, had various problems with engine coils failing leaving me stranded, leaky dampers, warning lights for various things and corrosion under the car, it says 5+ owners in the add but I was 6th and it’s been passed around 3 dealerships and not in private ownership since me for the last 18 months.

It is a great spec car but when I traded it in to a dealer it had a cracked bumper, one of the rear lights held in by just one screw and rattles around, clutch will be due around now, major service probably due and the most worrying thing was that during my full ownership of a couple of years I put it back to the dealer a few times and they could never identify a problem with the brakes which caused bad vibration.

In addition they’re also advertising it for 90k more than I let it go for last year, asking prices on these are really just a bit ridiculous now compared with a much more refined Aventador.

Sandy,... so true. I've had the nut-n'-bolt restoration and I can vouch for the upkeep if you're going to drive it. Incidentally.. i'm thinking of selling mine. I take it you'd give mine a good testimonial winkbow

Here's some real-world costs from my first year of ownership...
Annual service at Carerra Sport cost me £600 this month. Previously, other costs were £950 for rear discs and pads, and £250 for front pads - all installed myself. Rear damper leak is estimated to cost £150 for refurb - I remove damper and send it.

Clearly, some level of DIY reduces costs but nothing too major for now....
