Murcielago Brake Light switch
Discussion
Afternoon,
Mine appears to have failed, fuses look good but no lights.
A quick scan of the internet suggests it is an easy to do job.
Mine is an 2003 manual, so not the Audi part. It is a screw in brass plunger type.
You can see it at the top of the brake pedal unscrews with a 14mm spanner. Internet suggests you reach up above an ECU box and unplug the other end.
That was not happening, my wrists don't bend enough to get there.
Removal of the instrument pod isn't difficult and you can get straight to it. The connector block is clipped onto a bracket which in turn is held in place by a small nut. No way could you remove this from underneath.
£26 plus VAT from Sevenoaks, which appears very reasonable, when I refit it I will try to route the cable in an easier route incase it fails again.

Mine failed a year ago on the way home from a show. As mine is e-gear I was completely stranded with no drive as you need your foot on the brake to select 1st gear!!!
The new brake light switch was about £8 from Eurospares but as the new switch was an updated version I needed a new bracket for it to fit (£120 from Lambo). Turned out it was the exact same bracket just with the screw hole in a slightly different place to accommodate the new version of the brake light switch!
I'm no good with spanners, but I was able to change mine in under an hour. The electric connector block is only slightly higher up from the switch. A small socket set will fit but you can only turn it 1/4 turn at a time so take a while as the bolt is a long one! You also have to be able to work upside down under the steering column.
Make sure you test it works by pushing the plunger down to see if the brake lights light up, before locking it into position otherwise you might need another new switch!!!
Good luck
Pete

Mine (egear) also failed at some traffic lights. Couldn't get a gear and caused huge congestion. It was a VW part number and updated from the version where you have to hold the pedal down when fitting. I think it was about £11 from the local VW garage. No need to change any brackets in my case. 5 minute job to change the switch.
Hi Reeso and Catfood12 ,
3 questions please
I have a 2005 E-Gear Murcielago Roadster , and having read this thread , feel that it would be sensible to keep a replacement Brake Light Switch in the car .
As you know the 2005 Roadster had the later Brake system , inherited from the system developed for the Gallardo.
(1) Which BLS part would I need for my car ?
Would the VW part Catfood12 has suggested above be the correct part for my car ?
(From Reeso's profile , I know that he has an E-Gear LP640 , but I cant work out which E-Gear Murcie you have Catfood 12.)
If not , how could I find out what BLS part I need for my 2005 Roadster ?
(2) If the BLS on my car failed suddenly , how easy would it be to replace the switch myself ?
A description of how to change the BLS on an early Roadster would be really valuable.
I'm also confused about whether an early Roadster will need a different bracket or not
Thank you for any constructive comments

Hi Carspath,
From what I was told when mine went, the old style switches which I had, you have, on our cars are no longer produced or available. Therefore it has to be the new switch and therefore the new bracket.
If you had both the new switch and bracket in your car with a small socket set it would be feasible to change it at the side of the road, upside down in the drivers foot-well with your head on the mat right under the peddles.
Now, the new bracket is exactly the same as the old bracket in every way except the drilled hole in it to fix it to the peddle box bit is in a slightly different place to accommodate the new style/size brake switch.
To be certain if what I've said is correct it would be best to check with your dealer, or my friend at Eurospares (Neil Bellton - 01787 477169) as they can use your reg/chassis number to confirm.
Cheers
Pete
