Hi all

I don’t frequent this forum section as I've been a porsche owner for many years but as I’ve no chance of buying a new one that i want I feel its time to maybe experience another marque.

After a recent holiday in dubai my son pointed out his favourite car was the Lambo Hurracan even though he thought it was a ferrari !! And it go me thinking about a change.

My previous car was a 997.1TT (4.5 years ownership) current car 991.1TTS (3+ years ownership) I don't change often and average 3-5k per year mileage wise as have a Macan as the go to daily or several motorcycles to choose from for fun in the sun.

Driving wise is a mix of drive out breakfast runs, trackdays & Ring trips.

Ive been musing over a change for 12 months now as I hold no favouritism at my local OPC for buying a new GT3 or RS and I refuse to pay overs for such a car.
I like the cheap running and servicing costs of the 911 also their warranty cover, so would be a good deciding factor

So my recent list of cars are very few,
Ferrari 458 / 488
Lamborghini Gallardo / Huracan

Budget would be £150k and under (I appreciate the 488 is not at that price yet, it was just on my radar as love the look of it) theres no time frame either as my current car is now SORN until April 2020.

What would be best suited to my needs in terms of usability, reliability and running costs?

Thanks in anticipation

Hi and welcome

As you already have a Macan for daily duties , I would suggest that you should go for the full fat Lambo experience ....... which means a mid-mounted South-North V12 car .

To keep within your budget (+/- a bit of negotiation ) you should be able to get a Murcielago or a Diablo , and possibly ( considering the current economic climate) an Aventador.

The first two carry the classic Lamborghini DNA ... a Bizzarrini engine and a spaceframe chassis , neither of which feature in the Aventador .

All 3 were /are manufactured fully at Sant ‘ Agata , which the V10 ‘s were not .

The V12’s are wide , which is a major limitation .
More so today than 20 years ago .
But , they are an event , in every possible manner , and I would not hesitate to recommend a Lambo V12

Be very careful as to which dealer you buy from .

Regarding servicing , David at Pangbourne , Roberto Grimaldi and Mike Pullen are all excellent , and all very honest ... can’t recommend them enough .

The V10’s are more useable, but I have no experience of them

Best of luck ... a nice choice awaits you .

Thanks carspath

My current ride fits easily in my normal sized garage so I’m somewhat restricted I guess in regards to width and length. The 911 is 1880mm wide x 4506mm length

It’s a comfortable fit but anything wider I would struggle to be honest.

Having a quick look online the dimensions of the Murcielago is 4610 x 2058 the width may be a problem unless someone can confirm otherwise.
I have a roller shutter type door so it removes the restricting framework of the original up & over so i have a bit extra width but not much%

Hi again .

Sadly , it looks like your garage width is going to rule out the
Murcie .

The V12s are wide cars , and scraping the rear wings or the wing mirrors are all too easy .

The other cars on your list are really tasty too , and anyone would be privileged to own one of those .
Take your time in deciding , and enjoy the chase .

Best of luck

Thanks guys.

Like i say I'm in no hurry as i have zero experience and knowledge on the Lambo’s & I would like to get some idea what the best replacement for the 911 is.

I’m looking to trade maybe around April. So will have some idea how the market is moving over next few months.

My last major service including plugs was circa £1500, next one is in 15 months which will be a minor and warranty renewal but thats not important if I've traded it by then.

What are the service intervals and prices like?

I’m based south of Birmingham (20 min drive) to give an idea of who might be recommended or your experiences.

They are lovely

I shipped one from Beijing to Hong Kong early last year, it was in transit to eventually end up in Tokyo.

Hope you don’t mind me sharing

interesting
i've just used lambo pangbo servicing for the first time
admittedly the car ought to feel better after a major service ( plus new tyres and front discs, and an a/c re-gas )
but i have to say that in twelve years, the car has never felt as tight and as quick as it did when i picked it up today
cheers david and colleagues

I’d be having a test drive of a Performante, it stands out the the most interesting/exciting and probably my next purchase. Also a good chance you might be able to pick one up close to your budget over the next few months.

Not too many options to work through either , just need to decide on seats, dynamic steering and whether you need the nose lift. Can’t advise on servicing but imagine it’s more then a Porsche, but far less then a V12!

No love for the McLaren ? your son would love the scissor doors and you won't get those on a Huracan

Would it be worth looking into servicing requirements?

Lambo are expensive.

That 488 may have the 7-year free service pack?

Would that not be an issue in a ‘normal size garage’ also im concerned about there depreciation of late albeit that may be unwarranted on certain models

The doors are very trick. They don't open as wide as you would think. Due to the roof cut-out aperture, entry and exit is very easy, and does not require a wider opening door. In fact, the 720S is slimmer than the 570 with both doors open.

Get a drive of a Performante and you'll love it, if you need to scratch the Mac itch then make sure you read the blog posted in the Mac forum first, to understand why they depreciate like crazy..

I'm not aware of anyone who's had a major problem with a Huracan thus far... I was in my local dealer recently getting mine serviced, and they showed me a high mileage Aventador that had a problem with the engine. Even though it was over five years old, Lamborghini replaced the engine FOC, there was no extended warranty as far as I know.

Im not quite sure what this refers to TBH.

My post is a genuine one and your more than welcome to come see whats sat in my garage any time you wish and i’ll explain my reasons for a change to anyone who would listen in return for the experience and advice for what what direction to go.

Its time for a change but having only been a Porsche driver and used to its all round capabilities and decent running costs, i need good advice before i can make a proper informed decision on the car I find most appealing.

I will certainly look at the Huracan and loom for a test drive as there seem to be many good recommendations for it.
