Went to Manchester Lambo and had good chat there - general view was that older Aventadors don't come through the dealer network because they have to do all the work needed to get to a fully manufacturer-approved level and can then offer the warranty, and so you're generally looking at £200k upwards for one.

So does this mean that the older ones at about £150k ish actually need loads doing to them, or is this dealer-speak? I appreciate it'll sell have the running costs of a £250-300k car, but find it harder to believe that once out of the main dealer network they will fall apart at the slightest provocation.....

thoughts/experiences welcomed, from whatever side of the discussion.....

Well it could be as old as a 2012 car, with multiple owners. Clocking is common, and many of them have been used as wedding hire cars and track day hire cars. Clutches are an engine out job, and it’s a single clutch so limited life span.

So it doesn’t surprise me that main dealers would struggle to find good old stock.

I waited until I had a bit more to spend, and bought a 2017, 1,200 mile used 'S' model.
It still had 7 months original warranty, and was needed when the gearbox had a fault.
33k bill covered (new gearbox).
Apparently big bills are rare, but when things go wrong, everything is silly money.
If looking at independents, check the max claim on the warranty - many are limited to 5 or 10k which will not go far.
And more importantly the max labour rate - not many garages will have the proper lambo diagnostic kit which is needed to work on these, and those that do, will be charging more than the silly £65 per hour max rates I have seen on some after market warranties being sold by some so called specialist dealers.
Main dealers have to give you at least 1 years fully inclusive warranty, and these are 6.7k per year on Aventadors.
Rarity helps residuals, as huracan's are everwhere in comparison.

A good call regarding the issues surrounding warranty labour rates - the RAC 'Platinum' cover used by many top end specialist dealers has a maximum hourly labour rate of £45 (outside M25 circle) and £65 (within M25 circle)!

ok thanks. Sounds like they are more expensive than I'm going to want to pay for one with a full warranty, at present, and that the bottom end could get overly costly to maintain.....

Where the hell can you get work done for £45 an hour.

Exactly my point, when you have independents selling you there warranties on high end vehicles, some are fine, just be sure to check properly with any supercar out of original warranty, that the new warranty you are being sold, is fit for purpose.

Mostly speaking, non main dealer warranties are not worth the paper they are printed on.

What you have been told OP makes sense, they are at the point where its just too risky/not worth it. Its not to say the cheaper ones need loads of work doing its more of a case of the unknown and thus risk of having to put 12 months warranty on it.

For what it's worth I bought a very low mileage (3,500 miles), one owner 2012 Aventador but had it inspected at a main dealer. Once I was happy I also put it through a full main service and replaced the tyres as they were out of date.

I think if you buy right with your head, follow sense and get an inspection, you should be fine. As we all know with these cars you are only a big bill away but do all you can to mitigate it. I nearly bought a later (with a little more miles) car with full history but once I knew who'd had it before, I really believe I dodged a bullet (famous YouTube singer who wrapped it like a Tron car and added LED lights all over it and changed the sound system. All removed before resale).

Only costs so far seven months in are a set of driver side window motors and rubbers (£2,300!!!!) and windscreen wipers (£150!!!!).

I'd like to find a really good Lamborghini Indi if anyone can help for when something like a clutch needs doing.

Some of the parts you can find identical non-Lambo.
Did that recently with some Murcielago ball joints £80 instead of £800…….
