I understand the P1 which featured at vmax last Saturday could only manage 205mph even with the generous 20mph tail wind.
Its Cd is quoted at 0.34 so it's reasonably slippy, based on this it has no more than about 700 real hp, anyone know if this car had the wick turned down ?

That would be consistent with no electric power being available; maybe there was no way to recharge the batteries through regeneration given the relatively few stopping opportunities in a single lap.

205mph is Vmax in Race Mode. Even with DRS deployed an increase above this is beyond the suspension capabilities. 217mph is achievable only in Sport Mode (or is it Track???). Either way you get the picture

As comparison 730bhp F12 was also running consistent 205 mph
(458 speciale 193mph)

Maff, respectfully that is a big difference between these cars which I thought should have been closer in terms of vmax. I thought the speciale would have been a lot quicker, albeit not F12 quick. Any thoughts please?

Maybe due to the driver.

Speciale is 120bhp down on F12. That's what makes the difference at those speeds. Not much in it to 100mph. However even if it did have more power it wouldn't go any quicker as at 193mph it's only 400rpm off redline due to low gearing.

my god that f12 is quick then. I knew it was but the vmax verifies it.

The P1 has huge aero down force which limits its high speed acceleration and top speed.
From 150mph up the 20 year old FI is as quick as the P1!!
In fact may be quicker, if I remember the F1 did 211MPH at Brunters.

One or two owners may be contacting McLaren for aero change.

Mark.

If you are going for a VMAX run why would you put the car onto a speed limiting mode that is designed for track grip? Surely just a case of using the correct setting and achieving it's limited top speed of 217mph.

But according to the info above it's supposed to have a vmax of 205 in race mode? However it did 209 through the traps and a photo shows 211 on the digital speedo. So in theory it couldn't have been limited to 205....

Yes I know & I don't understand why that is and I don't want to speculate either.

Actually, the photo you refer to is from a vid from Shmee I think (there are a few vids uploaded). The owner of the P1 during the slowdown is actually heard saying "that was 205mph!", so 211, 209, 205; who knows.

It was in Race mode during all the runs as far as we've seen. the only mode where it can reach its top speed is in sport mode, as well as having better acceleration at high speeds.

P1's Cd is 0.34 in Normal mode and ~0.38 in Race mode.

It was probably trying to maximise grip and goal was to break 200 which it achieved. That runway is very bumpy in places and grip is lost very easily, I felt my car move all over the place and I was using semi slicks.

On the day I heard that he was off on a big trip in the P1 the following week so didn't really want to push things too hard.

A friend of mine was a calibration engineer on the P1 and he believes that had he been pushing it, the P1 should have got over 210 easily at Brunters.

I find it hard to believe anyone can "hold back" at Brunters ? My 18 year old 993 was pedal to the metal all the way to the limiter at 201mph, surely a state of the art Hypercar would be maxing it ?

If it did indeed manage 209 then this is better and indicative of 800hp, does anyone know what the frontal area or CdA is of the P1, maybe it is quite a big front end ?
