Hello all. I'm a potential 650S buyer and have narrowed down to to cars/colours. Both very different!!

First of all I appreciate colour is a very personal choice but find myself at a point where my head says one thing but heart says another (you can probably guess which way around).

I'm thinking of a Mantis Green or a Storm Grey car. Same spec/age/mileage/cost.

I wanted to explore on here whether you are aware if either of these colours is a resale killer or considered particularly desirable?

Clearly from an ownership perspective they are very different: I think the car looks better in the green but wonder if in the real world the colour ends up being OTT and attracts too much attention.

If anyone has views/thoughts they would be gratefully accepted.

There's a green 650s on classifieds that is of the cheapest 650s' out there, and has been for sale for a while now. Im wondering whether whilst people like the green, they're mainly scared off when it comes to actually putting money down.

I can't add anything other than agree. The green looks awesome in the flesh, but i've always been in the camp of 'why' make a loud car louder by choosing a loud colour. Likewise why be shy about it so somewhere in between safe & loud is where i'd play.

I'm with Jappo wink
Shmee's Mantis Green 650S spider sold quickly, but you are limiting the pool of buyers with such a strong colour
I contemplated Mantis but prefer Napier Green that came in on the 675LT
Then I saw a volcano red car in the flesh that was it
Best advice I can give is visit a dealer with a LOT of cars in stock (or a factory tour wink ) so you can see as many colours as possible in the flesh.

I would echo these comments. I loved Volcano yellow but wasn't brave enough to order my own car in that colour because it does restrict the market come resale.
Whilst bright colours do look fab I think a McLaren is more suited overall to subtle and classy colours so I also ended up with Volcano Red. " I love the colour" is the first thing everyone says about the car so I guess I'm not alone and that they are unbiased opinions

you should buy the car in the colour you want, not the colour you think someone else might want at some time in the future. Sure you may lose a few bob if it doesn't appeal to others later, but what exactly is the point of it if its not the one you want....?

Volcano Red is the preferred colour at the moment but times move on and in a few years it may be volcano yellow. smile

Agree some colours come in and out of fashion like silver and white most recently.
I also liked white but just thought it would age badly and go out of fashion.

Some colours are "classics" though and as they say class is permanent, Form is temporary. Think Volcano Red will always look good personally and looks different in different lights

I went Tarocco Orange because I thought it was the best colour, what other people may think is a complete irrelevance. Why on earth anyone would avoid the colour they like most in case it might cost them a few quid at some indeterminate time is a mystery to me.

Thanks all. A total spread of responses which is unsurprising - As is the love of volcano red. I saw a VR car in the metal last year and I do have to say the pictures don't do that colour justice.

Going to look at the storm and green cars this weekend and will hopefully press the button on one...

Taste and fashion change. In 2003 I bought a white GT3. At the time my friends told me that I was crazy, could never resell it, etc. Within the next few years the colour became one of the most popular on Porsches and other sports cars.

Choose what appeals to you. If you have good judgment, that will come through and work in your favour at resale time.

yes
Especially at this level
Napier wasn't around when I ordered mine, once I saw VR in the flesh that was decision made.
For me the factory tour helped a lot, seeing so many different colours next to each other in the cars in a well lit room

You should of course go with the color you personally like the most but do not under estimate the difference the colours will have on your ownership experience.

If you get a bright green car, everyone will stare at you, everywhere you go and the car will always attract attention when it is parked. If you are comfortable with that then great, go for it! The grey car will allow you to go about and park up 'relatively' anonymously in comparison.

I had a strong preference for the latter and was specifically looking for a 'boring' grey or silver car. I ended up with a silver car and love it. I'm comfortable with the level of attention it gets and so is my wife.

Good luck with whatever choice you make!

You can't really make a bad choice. They seem to suit any colour. VR is awesome but I bought carbon black. Black makes it look dark and menacing, someone described it as the darth Vader of supercars in that colour.

I'd quite happily get a mantis green one if it came up, I think they really suit that colour as well.

go to nearest dealer & see the colours side by side - they can be a lot different that photos off the 'net when seen in the flesh.

VR never really interested me from many images i saw online, until I saw one in the flesh in decent light.... wow!

Sunlight hits it at different angles and creates many shades of red, the metallic finish has real depth, brilliant!

Lots of cameras don't grab the metallics the same as seeing them in the flesh, VO is the same.

I liked it so much I bought a VR 12C yesterday, see "Pushed the button" thread.

Then go and view the cars in person.

I just bought a 12C... I have never spent anything like £120k on a car, the idea that I would get anything other than what I want is ridiculous!

Having said that, my opinion for what it is worth is that there are better colours in the range than either of the two you listed. My car is volcano orange but part of that is that I wanted the launch spec, VO with the supposedly least-desirable wheels and a nice smattering of carbon...
