Well I would imagine the dealer is as disappointed as the potential purchaser, no sale no fee and time wasted in trying to sell it frown

do you ever give it a rest. The point is a dealer seemingly agreed a deal then backed out, nothing to do with your McLaren fetish.
Car was on SOR with Alistair Bols who obviously brokered a deal based on the owners instructions and authority but when it became crunch time the owner has got cold feet and pulled the rug from underneath Alistair.
Not sure what else anyone can do when the owner revokes the sale. Shame for both the buyer and Alistair but ultimately its the owners car to sell or not

For the record, yes it was an SOR and the owner of the car changed his mind at the 11th hour. Bloody annoying but what can you do. Worst part was that I found out 5 minutes after breaking the news to my parents who now think I'm totally nuts!! I've not told them the deal fell through yet. laugh

Alastair was a gentleman and pleasure to deal with throughout, as everyone who has dealt with him will, I'm sure, agree with.

He has made it his mission to find me a better car at the same price. biggrin

I'm sorry, but I would be ringing around main dealers now after that let down.

Once bitten twice shy.

What do you think Alastair is going to do?...doh.

He is as straight as a car salesmen can be and far more trustworthy than most dealers.

Unless the car was sold by the dealer before the gentlemen on here expressed an interest, surely he should have some form of control of his perceived stock rather than being seen as wasting people's time as he is now.

As I say, I wouldn't look to deal with anyone who acted that unprofessionally with me at that level of expenditure.

How can he have control over something he doesn't own (as the car was SoR)?

If the seller agrees to SoR but then pulls out at the last minute, I'm not sure what Alastair could have done to prevent it - sue the seller for wasting his time and give the money to the potential purchaser? Great way to run a commission based car sales company....no one would go near you.

But wouldn't a professional dealer have a contract with the seller? Also was the buyer on here told it wasn't the dealers car to sell from the outset or say it on the original advert?

Apologies but a similar situation happened to me a few years ago with an apparent well respected dealer in Derbyshire and it was an absolute farce from start to finish.

I feel impelled to post because it would be a shame if a prospective purchaser of a used McLaren was put off from using or approaching Alistair Bols due to comments made by Drclarke. My dealings with Alistair were nothing less than exemplary, let me tell you why - Alistair was incredibly helpful in assisting me in understanding the McLaren range as a newbie at the time. I was negotiating with Alistair to buy a car from him, but at the very last minute another car came on the market which was closer to the spec I wanted and was actually at a much higher price than the car Alistair had, one call with Alistair and he advised me to go buy the other car. In fact I had him negotiate to buy the car for me, even though Alistair was not involved in the transaction itself as that was done with the main dealer in question. In addition Alistair then went on to assist me in buying another car. His knowledge and integrity are second to none in the world of McLaren.

If I was buying or selling Or looking for advice I would have no hesitation in turning to Alistair. I know there are many other posts with similar sentiment.

+1 and a lot more I suspect.

Who knows the details of this specific event. But he does his best for both buyer and seller. For many people over the years. Sometimes things happen that are outside our reasonable control and the measure is how we deal with those events.

When I buy another I will certainly be going to Alastair.

I think it's safe to see that the dealer has either a few log ins, or ala Verdi its own army of vested interest of fans who post up in his defence.

I'll leave the thread now, again as I say once bitten twice shy,

Agreed. I looked at a car with Alastair 18 months ago, decided against, but asked him to keep an eye out for me as I had money burning a hole. I then found one at Ascot & quizzed Alastair about it - he could easily have put me off so he could sell me something else, but didn't, and I bought the car, and have been very happy with it since.

It'd be a shame if a nice chap's hard-earned reputation was tarnished by someone misunderstanding a situation. It all looks to me to be an unfortunate but perfectly innocent chain of events. Drclarke, I'd suggest you zip it until you know the full background to exactly what happened.

More unfounded accusations. You could just have said sorry, that would've been classier.

Complete tosh !

Alistair is a top bloke who has given me much good advice on several occasions now completely free of charge and with out any prejudice or self interest involved.
I find him extremely knowledgeable and helpful and unfortunately with a SOR car these things can happen whether its through Alistair or a main dealer.
If Alistair said he will come up with another better car you can rest assure he will be good for his own personal word

Alastair is the nicest and most honest person I have ever encountered in car sales. This situation was obviously out of his control. I would recommend him 100% no question.

C'mon..........

I've dealt with Alastair and bought my first McLaren via him..........his reputation proceeds him and is fully justified........there is no harder crowd to please than PH and he has most people onside, I've never heard a bad word against him.

His cars are on SOR.......he can work on a deal right to the last second and if the owner changes their mind, thats not his fault...he wouldn't be chuffed either as he won't be getting paid but I'm sure he would act with decorum, get on with it and find another car for the buyer.

Thinking about it, you'd expect AB to know where the vast majority of McLaren cars are in the Uk.........so would always be a good starting point if you were after something in particular....
