This is a classic value versus mileage dilemma. Knowing it will get used, do I go for a 540/570 or an older 12c? There is something appealing about the original model (with appropriate upgrades) and I wondered if it would be a less mileage sensitive financial proposition over say 2 years and 20,000 miles.

Any advice welcomed, thanks.

Pick up a low mileage 12C and an extra 20,000 miles in 2 years will average out ok on what could be a 7 year old car by then. Putting high mileage on a new sport series will definitely cost a lot more

I had a similar dilemma and went down the low mileage 12c route. I picked up a late 2014 car with about 6k miles on it late last year and plan on putting 10k mile on it per year - possibly to sell it late 2018.

I think this is the sensible way if you're going to put loads of miles on it.

Also so far so good - I've done 13k km since October last year and it's a pleasure to drive!

Thanks for the feedback. The 12c does seem to make most sense.

12c. It's a better car too in many respects.

An extended warranty sounds pretty essential

What respects, the 570s is a much better drive.

Whats "better" ? More sporty feel due to being less well engineered ? If so then yes the 570S does drive "better" but feeling more sporty is not necessarily better overall.

I have both a 570S coupe and a 650S spider. The character of the 2 cars is quite different but ultimately the 650S is infinitely "better" than the 570S IMHO.
One is a high end sports car while the other is a supercar hence McLaren's model branding and pricing

There are differences between the 570S and 12C. I have picked these up on immediate back to back drives. 570S has both faster and smoother gear changes from take off to around 40mph. Because if this it feels more alert at low speeds. Both are very similar at medium speeds. The 570S is gut wrenchingly fast but at the top end the 12C is even faster. For looks (personal preference) and reduced depreciation I would go for a 12C as the slightly better drive-ability below 40mph is not worth a premium and increased depreciation. I also prefer the interior of the 12C.

The 650S is now looking like a very good buy. They are now at a premium as low as £30-40k over a 12C. If you factor in lower miles, 2-3 years newer, factory warranty and subtle improvements in most areas over the 12C they are superb value. Esp. as a coupe as there were less made than 675LT's!

As others have said if you buy a lower mileage 12C and put on 10k miles a year for a few years you should not lose much. This is exactly what I did and after 16 months the car is worth a bit more than I paid for it despite the mileage. If I had not driven it would be worth quite a bit more than i paid for it! All you need to factor in is £3,500 for warranty per year and £1,500 for servicing. Unless you own a gold mine I would not buy one without a warranty.
