Also we are comparing apples with oranges here. The Huracan Perfomanti and the Porsche are hardcore special addition track weapons. The 720s is not. Let's wait for the LT version to come along then we can have a discussion based on similar products.

Currently, the 720s is coming out on top in the magazine group tests against the likes of the Ford GT, AMG GTR, Lambo Performante and the Porsche GT3, both "CAR" and "Top Gear" have awarded it the top slot. The 720s also bettered the Aventador S in a recent German magazine so opinion of its status seems to be universal at the moment.

As a side note one particular comment from Chris Harris on the Top Gear super test about the 720s during the track test was this and I quote:

"Comparable to the AWD Performante in the wet, some 10-15mph quicker around pretty much any corner in the dry" That is a quite remarkable statement about the 720s abilities

Hi folks, the 720s has also come out on top of the Road and Track mega test, I quote the verdict:

"In the meantime, the new McLaren effortlessly earns the PCOTY laurels by performing the near-impossible: It rides better than the Bentley, outhandles the aero-intensive Huracán, and leaves the snorting Camaro dead to rights in a drag race, all while making its driver feel like the most special person in the world. You could own this car for a lifetime and never grow tired of the pur sang manner in which it conquers everything from a 200-mph blitz to the commuting crawl. No street car in history has offered a better driving position, a more immediate command of the road, or a better integration of usability and capability. And, not for nothing, it’s improved in every possible respect from the 650S, which was already one of the world’s most competent supercars.

In this fearsomely strong field of 10 brilliant automobiles, only this one truly advances the state of the art. The fact that it does so in the exospheric environment of the super-cum-hypercar only serves to underline the degree of difficulty involved. Inhumanly sleek, monstrously quick, reassuringly approachable, the McLaren 720S is our 2018 Performance Car of the Year."

They tested the 720S at 9.9 sec in the quarter mile at 148.2mph, that is 0.4 sec quicker than the factory quotes, these times are getting silly. Its good to see that these are not one offs as these times are being verified by owners

With regard to the driving position, presumably they drove it with the optional buckets. With the standard seats I definitely had the feeling I was sitting 'on it rather than in it'.

For its status to be pretended anywhere near "universal" it would have to beat the latest 911 turbo S variant in a German mag like "Auto, Motor und Sport".
It couldn't have been "beaten" by a behemoth like the latest Lambo V12 even in an Italian mag.

You can see a video here and it they are indeed in the buckets

Very impressive video, and same lap time as a Performante which given it's not yet even the LT version bodes well. Then again the AMG GTR lap time put both to shame!

Tyres. They are everything in these laptime tests. The AMG has a tyre option (ZP Cup2 I think) that conveniently enough the AMG uses in the same size as the corvette Z07 that has set some amazing times. I assume the Performante was on trofeos as well vs the 720 on new gen corsas.

True, and they gave a nice summary of the tyres,,,

"Our 720S tester came with P Zero Corsa tires, which simply don’t have the grip of the P Zero Trofeos, Goodyear F1 Supercars, or Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires fitted to the other supercar-level contenders."

In the EVO test where the 720s bettered the P1 Steve Sutcliffe states that the 720s is very sensitive to tire pressures on the track needing the front tires especially to have their pressures lowered right down to allow the car to better key into the surface. Apparently the McLaren techs recommend this having organised a number of McLaren specific track days over the last few days.

Back on the road put the tires back to recommended pressures

I have been lucky enough to have just spent the weekend driving 850 miles around Belgium, France and UK.in a 720s I have been in a few of the best super cars. But this 720s is just of the charts. And you put that round the Nurburgring with a pro driver and it will smash the 7mins, I have no doubt. It’s phenomenal in every department, and I’m Sure Mclaren are sand bagging the performance figures, after all it can’t be aloud to be as quick if not quicker than P1. The car also got encredible attention and love from the general public. McLaren have raised the bar too another level.

Must say the car does seem everybit a Hypercar for daily use! A real bargain for usablilty and performance from what ive read.

And to think DMS have a stage 2 pack that gives it another 100bhp in case its too slow..
Reviewed in this months EVO magazine i believe
