Hello,

It's my first post here.

I am considering buying a 540C. I was curious about the common technical issues with this model. Understandably, I am doing my due diligence in spare time, however nothing beats straightforward forum feedback!

I would truly appreciate any credible feedback.

You've come to the wrong place for 'credible' feedback !!!

Don't let Yipper vs RamboLambo start again please

As an aside is the 540 still produced ?

As a further aside you'll find a lot of brand specific information at McLarenLife and the UK owners group on Facebook

With the greatest of respect I would suggest I have a darn site more knowledge and feedback for posters than yourself hence the volume of PM's I get regularly asking for advice.

TBH I don't think I ever seen a post from yourself that offers any value to any discussion and above is just another pathetic example of the drivel you constantly pump out rolleyes

OP I have owned a 540C for a year now. Truly brilliant car. Test drove the 570S too but opted for 540C. Have never regretted it.
Only fault was IRIS not picking up the DAB tuner which was sorted by a hard reset.
It was magnificent and never missed a beat on a tour of the South of France and Italian Riviera. Lots of very positive attention from many people. High point was beating my mates Porsche Turbo S cab in a rolling drag race!! So it’s quick enough.
It has also won What Car Sports car of the year 2017 over £100K. Link to article here https://www.whatcar.com/awards/best-sports-car/201...

I don't think there are any problems specific to the 540c that aren't common with the rest of the Sports Series. There have been reports of corrosion on the edges of some off the alloy body panels due to poor factory prep, reported to have been sorted on the warranty but certainly something to check if you are looking at a used car. Otherwise they are pretty durable with decent quality interior materials and a very reliable drive-train.

As stated above, the DAB radio seams to have it's share of problems which are covered by the warranty if a re-set doesn't work, and my 570s seams to have an over-sensitive door window anti-trap function which occasionally drops the glass when closed. Something that will get sorted when it goes in for its service in May.

That will see my first full year of ownership and so far so good. A few little electrical gremlins which you wouldn't expect but nothing which takes off the joy of ownership.

Best advice it to drive one, drive a 540c, drive a 570s, or GT as see which suits how you drive, there is little performance compromise with the 540c If you're doing some research, try finding the Youtube videos from 'Seen Through Glass' from last year when he had a 540c. Some of the episodes are little 'youtube' with his different colour wraps, but he comes across quite honestly about his experience with his 540c and his mates 570s.

Now on my second 570s which is basically the same as the 540c.

Cracking cars however, they do suffer with various electrical gremlins but nothing that cant be sorted under warranty.

Having spent some time in various courtesy cars as well, things they all seem to suffer with are;

Rattling from centre of dash.

The front lift pump whines when activated.

Other issues you may want to look out for that as long as they are not the result of a stone chip will be covered by warranty, but would require paint are rust spots that can be found in various spots around the car.

HTH and good luck with the purchase.

Thank you so much. I did watch pretty much every video Sam (STG) has put together. I did find them informative.

Awesome. Thank you. I am about to pay a short visit to McLaren center in Milan (I am based in Italy). I will specifically look for these issues.

I think the 540C is a bargain, esp one that has been run in by someone else and depreciated a little. I have a 570GT with a Larini Exhaust (looks and sounds best IMHO). It has been faultless over the 6,000 miles I've done since I bought it at the end of July. I just love driving it, but hate the fact it takes so long to wash due to all the nooks and crannies (a good thing on a nice day, not so in the winter!).

Regarding the lift noise, I am pretty sure this is caused by activating front lift while using a lot of steering lock. It happened to me twice, and hasn't since I worked this out.

Do it. You only live once.

Oh, and the doors are worth it alone :-)

Had my 570s for a year. 11,000 miles, 1 service, 4 tyres. It has been epic. Swap to Michelin Pilot Sport 4S when changing tyres. They are far better than the Pirelli. For UK owners insure with NFU - saved me nearly £1500. No issues to report.

Is anyone willing to own up to having PM'd RL for advice ?

RL is the type of guy, that one person, one time PM'd him and that equates to people PM him all the time.

Bit like that other thread where he goes on about all the super cars he's ever owned, You would think it was in the dozens when in reality it's been 4.

Im actually surprised he hasn't mentioned his inbound Huracan PF on this post seeing as he feels the need to bleat on about it on every other thread, If I read the phrase "Glorious V10 roar" one more time... rofl
